The George and Dragon is a stylish country inn with a cosy bar, lovely restaurant and comfortable bedrooms - ideally located on the edge of the Lake District, in a lesser known part of Cumbria. A real foodie destination (claiming excellent reviews and awards), where much of the produce served there is grown by the owners at their sister establishment, Askham Hall (open to the public) part of their family estate (the Lowther Estate), just a couple of miles away. They grow a wide variety of fruit, vegetables and herbs in the kitchen garden and in the surrounding fields and farm, their breeds of beef, pork and goat meat are traditional and slow grown. Game, including Roe Deer and Red Deer, are sourced on the Estate woods and moors as is partridge, pheasant, woodcock and duck which come from local game keepers. Their fish comes from the north west coast of Cumbria and occasionally from the local rivers. Cheeses and smoked meats and fish come from local suppliers. Nearby micro-breweries supply the local ales.
Photographs, prints and archive images on the walls tell the story of the owner's family estate's unique heritage and comfy sofas, richly coloured rugs, bare wooden tables, intimate alcoves and crackling fires make it a perfect place to relax and unwind.
Food serving times are from 12.00 until 14.30 and from 18.00 until 21.00.
The George and Dragon has eleven elegant bedrooms, all of which are individually designed and decorated, and have roll top baths or contemporary walk-in showers.
