** This cottage is no longer in our portfolio **
Situated on the old Roman road ‘The Stanegate’ in the village of Fourstones on the edge of the Northumberland National Park, this traditional stone-built cottage is centrally located in the UNESCO World Heritage Site Hadrian’s Wall Country. There are lovely views of the Tyne Valley from the cottage and some good countryside walks around the village and river, which is also popular for fishing. There is a village shop very closely and a dog-friendly pub, The Red Lion, which serves food under a mile’s walk away, with several others within a short drive.
Hadrian’s Wall and several Roman forts and museums are within very easy reach of the cottage, including Vindolanda, which attracts worldwide visitors for its archeological excavations. The self-catering accommodation is also very well placed for exploring the surrounding area including Kielder Water & Forest, the North East coast, Northumberland National Park, the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Beamish Museum. Tynemouth and the coast are about 45 minutes away, and the cities of Newcastle upon Tyne, Durham and Carlisle are easily accessible. The Hadrian’s Cycleway (route 72) passes the front door and the attractive, historic, market town of Hexham is four miles away with a wide range of shops and amenities, an impressive Abbey, sports centre, golf course, race course and the Old Gaol, England’s first purpose-built prison, now a museum.
