I was out doing my usual afternoon walk yesterday when I heard a bit of shouting coming from a small group of walkers. As I looked over I witnessed the owner of a dog shouting for him to fetch his ball from the river and when he didn't she picked him up by his collar and threw him in!!!! She actually hung him by his collar and swung him into the river!! I was so shocked, I didn't know what to do

Am I overreacting?

Not overreacting at all, that's horrible, and I don't think I would be able to stop myself making my feelings known to her.

I wanted to but I'm not very good with confrontation and the owner didn't seem the sort to take a talking to lightly! I did make it obvious that I was watching her do it with a lot of staring and shaking of the head...

So sad... sometimes it's a shame looks can't kill.

That's apalling. I think I would have told her that I would be reporting her to the R/SSPCA.

Blimey. It's difficult to know what to do in those situations, and sometimes for your own safety it can be better to keep quiet. I'm not sure what I would've done but a call to your local Dog Warden may be enough to put them on the lookout for this person when they're next in the area. Also, surreptitiously filming and uploading to social media to name and shame seems to have an effect these days.

That sounds like a good idea. Naming and shaming!

I will keep a look out and if she does anything again I will pluck up the courage to say something!

That’s so awful :( was the dog ok afterwards? So difficult to know what to do in those circumstances xx

I'm not sure if that's legal?
It isn't illegal - you see convictions now where a bystander has captured footage and it's been used in evidence - here's just one example. Like it or not, domestic CCTV is widespread and also used in similar circumstances. There are no laws that prohibit filming like this unless it takes place in or near a restricted or sensitive area (e.g. military base), then you can expect to have you collar felt. Until recently - and perhaps in some instances even now - the Police were heavy-handed when they were filmed, detaining people and getting them to (illegally) delete footage they had captured, but filming the Police is not an offence either, and guidance issued by what was ACPO stated as much. That said, the person being filmed might not be too happy and it could well fuel a confrontation so care is to be exercised!

The dog seemed ok afterwards. It was a springer spaniel and was running around... hard to tell!

Such a horrible thing to do ! Think I might have said something but people are so aggressive these days you never know how they’ll react.....I might have said how would you like it if I picked you up by the neck and threw you in! Now there’s an idea for next time....:D:D

From how she was towards the dog I knew it would turn into an argument with me. Can I say it then run away pretty sharpish next time!!?? ;)

That's so-o bad. I've got a spaniel and I know that if he won't enter water it's because there's a good reason- too cold, too tired etc. I think I might have said something. I'd try for friendly at first...as in I was told that if dogs don't want to go in after a ball, it's best not to force them- or you'll make them afraid of water. And then afraid of you! Which I'm sure you don't want.

I hate confrontations but I have done a few. (I've worked for dog rescue where you get used to the weird and just plain horrible.) I've had civil responses, dumb staring and one really nasty one.

You can't win- if you say nothing you go away seething. I do think you are allowed to film who you want.

I think uploading to social media if there's identifiable children in the video is probably illegal.

It isn't illegal to post video on social media without permission from all involved. If someone doesn't like it they would need to file a privacy complaint and ask for your video to be edited. If you inadvertently have someone's child on the screen then it would be up to a parent to ask for the video to be edited if they objected on their behalf.

You're right - I've double-checked my facts and I was wrong. As you were!:)

Well you were sort-of right! In that they can ask for it to be taken down- but if it's of a creep doing bad things to a dog then by that time everyone's seen it anyway- so job done.:p
