Hi,

Yesterday I bought home an adorable 10 weeks old frenchie puppy called Frank!
So far he really has been brilliant but i am concerned about how scared he is.
Obviously I realise this is going to be a very scary time for hom until he gets used to his surrounding. Last night he slept in his crate in my bedroom for the first time. Theres wasnt much crying but when i went to take him out to the toilet st 2am he was very scared about me carrying him. He did hos business very wuickly and i manager to get him back in his crate easily and we all went back to sleep. However I have woken him up at 6am to take him out for the toilet agsin amd he won’t let me take him out of the crate, he just hides right st the back. Ive left the crate door open and sat waiting for him to come out for half an hour but he hasnt moved. I’ve tried reassurance but no joy. I’m worried he desperately needs the toilet! What should i do?!

Have you any high value treats like roast chicken that you can use to tempt him out? When he does come out, be calm and reassuring, tell him what a good boy he is but don't overhandle him until he has more confidence. If you absolutely have to lift him, do it quietly with no fuss and drama - but I mean after he is out of the crate, tempt him out first and then lift him if you must.

All experiences over the next few weeks will need to be good ones. So make sure there are no boisterous dogs and children that might be scary.

When he does see you as the person to trust, get him out and about as soon as possible in a carrier, sling or even your arms so he can start to see the outside world from a safe place. As long as he isn't on the ground (actually in many places he is safe even on the ground) he will be perfectly safe.

I ended up having to lift him out as even the temptation of breakfast wouldn’t make him come out on his own! He would just come as close to the edge as possible and then cry that he couldn’t reach his bowl! He was a little scared but was soon playing with his toys again so hoping that was ok for him!

Oh bless him. Give him some time.

Would he follow a food trail out of his crate?
