Wish I could read Chinese !

I doubt it's anything to do with dogs somehow!

In the forum I help run, the most effective anti-spam measure was to have a question on registration along the lines of 'Who made the first post in X thread?', where the thread is easily found. So here it could be 'Who started the "forum rules" thread at the top of the Introductions section?' and the new member would have to reply 'dogforum'. This stopped bots, people who couldn't speak English, and lazy spammers in their tracks. Though some genuine new members do find it a little challenging...

Don't know if that's any help to you, @Josie ?

We do have a background spam checker which flags up loads of suspicious emails that don't even reach the website itself but for some reason these pesky ones keep getting through the system!!!:mad::mad:

I think asking people to do that would be too complicated but I'l ask Oliver about those ones where you have to copy what's written below or the ones where you have to answer 9 + 2 etc.

I am rather hungry now for Chinese....

I think it was how to get fake Canadian diplomas. Must admit it was doing my head in.

Are new members automatically activated? If so, would it be worth considering admin activation, so you can quickly check the user name, IP address & email address online (general search and against sites like Stop Forum Spam). It takes time, depending on how many registrations you get, and means new members have to wait a while before they can post, but it'd probably be quicker than dealing with the deluge you're getting at the moment!

Apologies if I'm teaching my granny to suck eggs again...

Not all new members are activated. The system picks up ones that have been blacklisted elsewhere or have other suspicions.

I would love to say I could filter through each member individually but we have so many a day this would not be an option.

Oliver has done some changes and there is a captcha on the registration form... however they were back again this morning. These are tricky bots that continually use different email addresses (so I can’t ban all emails with the same ending) so he’s got to research into it more.

Please bare with me, as soon as I see them I remove them all. It’s driving me mad also :(

I did feel for you Josie when I had a look this morning :( must be so frustrating , you have better things to do with your life than sort out these idiots every morning

Just a thought (though Oliver may well already have thought of it) - some forum software allows for first post approval. I agree with Mayblossom, they can be as hard to shift as a flea invasion, and just as welcome!

Just when you thought it was safe to log in...theyre back!

Josie I really feel your headache right now...

That’s a good idea! I ask him about this.

I was just thinking we should have a sweepstake on how many spam posts we should wake up to and halleuja, there's none! Well done Josie and Oliver:) (Unless it's just a public holiday in Spamland...;))
