OH mentioned some cockers he met this morning that who had tufts or hair on the top of their heads, so he didn't recognise them as cockers. I've seen cockers with these topknots quite often, but I just wondered - is this a normal variation, or does it depend on specific type? And in the showing world, is it regarded as an asset or a negative, or are either equally acceptable?

No I think it's just a coat variation- we've never had a cocker with topknot but I've seen them- oddly enough they were both liver coloured. Maybe some colours more prone to it? (The only other thing is they could be flat-coated cockerpoos. Hard sometimes to tell.)

Are you able to find a photo of what one looks like please @JudyN? Curious :)

I have 2 cockers that stay with me, both have really cute tufts on their head, one is a lemon roban(think that's the correct name?) and the other is black and white. I'll go through my photos and see if I can find one of them.

My uncle had a golden cocker spaniel with a paler top knot, almost cream. I've also wondered about it

ok, here's the best I can do.. it seems to depend on their hair cuts too!

That's the beautiful Pluto and Jessie in the pics,btw..:D

We met a man with a liver working cocker who told us 'the topknot' was a constant problem and when his wife gave the dog a centre parting he knew it was time to have him clipped.

Our cocker spaniel Sam had a topknot i never thought anything about when i was young except he looked like he had a loads off curls on the top off his head he was so cute :)

They look so pretty with top knots!

I hate the topknots, I always pluck them out when they get too long.
I find that the liver and liver roan tend to have them most, but other colours have them too.
