We have just returned home with the gang after having a walk that we don't often do.
The Hazel trees were absolutely covered with nuts, some were quiet huge and ready for picking.
As we picked them, quiet a few of the other ripe ones that were ready for picking were falling below, (just where the girls were waiting). The girls already know about Hazel nuts as we have some in our field, so as fast as the ripe ones fell onto the ground there were dogs waiting to snatch them up. Just a few crunches of the nuts to break the shells and the whole things were swallowed.
I have never noticed the nut shells pass through the dogs in the poos and they have never caused a problem. I suppose that if the shells turn brown within the digestive system, they would not be easy to distinguish.
As dogs don't have teeth for grinding, I wonder if their digestive systems can somehow digest the nut shells !
I am not going to soften their poo on a bucket of water to see what the nut shells look like after they have passed through. hmm.

FTAO; @JudyN
So far I have found some pieces of undigested kibbled Maize that would have been consumed at about 8.30 this morning when the chickens were being fed. (still yellow) Haa haa:D

Yeah I've noticed it's a good year for nuts- should be excellent sweet chestnuts soon too. Not a good year for squirrels though- there are fewer about, so wondering if it's another disease knocking them back. (I know people hate greys but it's not their fault they were brought over here and I quite like to see one in garden carrying off my bird feeder under its arm! :p- you have to make your own entertainment in the country. )

We hardly see any squirrels here at all. Im guessing there is just not enough forest for them. When I did see a couple they were reds though.

Only one poo yesterday afternoon where the pieces of Maize were identified from the chickens morning feed. No poos in the evening or during the night but I did collect 5 poo's when we went to our field and poo picked our donkeys, 24 hours later. 7 dogs is too many to notice where they have all pooped at the same time, so I think finding 5 of them is pretty good.

Now, specs on and a screw driver (not a knife and fork) to poke and separate the stuff.

Only one poo had definite pieces of nut shells (but not many) others had pieces of nut that had not been ground (because dogs teeth can not do that! ) and had not been digested either. There were lots of small fairly hard bits and pieces that could be broken but not squashed, (and I was not prepared to nibble any of these bits myself to see what consistency they wereo_O,) and one had a few pieces of small stone, no more than 1/8" in size (which could have been picked up by mistake by one of the girls). I have no idea where the nut shells have gone.
So I assume that the shells can be partially digested/ dissolved in the dogs gut. Their poo stinks when poked about, and some is quiet soft and sticky and lighter after eating any amount of whole nuts, much like cheap kibble fed poo. All of the "nut poo" has passed through without any problem.

I reckon that I need 10/10 for that:rolleyes:

That's beyond the call of duty, @excuseme !

I can conform that lolly sticks can pass through a dog's digestive system completely intact, and take two weeks to do so. Of course, that could just be Jasper:rolleyes:

2 weeks for a lolly stick! That was lucky! Did you poke it around and have a nibble to check it's consistency ?

I will give any more poos that we get between today and tomorrow a good poke just to see if anything has arrived a bit late.

No, certainly not! Though he did once produce an odd-shaped, toothed, bit of plastic which I cleaned up and photographed. My main concern was that it might have come off a bit of machinery at the raw food company and got into the food, which wouldn't have been good. But they didn't recognise it, and I never worked out what it was. Might see if I can find the photo later....

Hubby picked up a dog poo that was already wrapped in a plastic bag a few days ago.
We knew that one, or some of the girls had stolen some food and some was also bagged (3 bags). The bags were a very thin quality, we have no idea when the poos were produced or how many days it took to pass through after the theft.

Yes, I'm sure it could make some entertaining reading.

I've picked up a rather glittery poo once, from the Airdale I walk, which was interesting! And yes it was around Christmas but not quite sure exactly what she had eaten..:D

This is officially the weirdest thread I have seen. I know we dog owners are pretty relaxed about discussing poo, but this one is the most extreme yet. I hope there aren't any newbies checking in who don't get our sense of humour!

It seems quite a normal topic to me, @JoanneF :p

I found the photos of what I found in Jasper's poo:

It brings tears to your eyes, doesn't it?

Ouch and wow! and you washed it and photographed it!!:D:D:D Suddenly I feel quite normal...:Dthankyou...

I have a cobnut tree in my garden. Lots of nuts but the squirrels strip it bare.
