Is it really necessary to have a 12 yr old dog given yearly boosters?

Obviously I am not a vet but all I can say is my girl had her shots up until she was 2, I then went on to Titer testing annually, ( this shows if the dog still has antibodies in their blood), since then she has not needed any vacs and she is now nearly 14 so for nearly 12 years she has been fine...

    Toilet training help!!!

We have used the same idea that Salcot mentions for a long time but we have always used 'last Time', (my wife's suggestion in case she wanted to call out with people around). And every dog we have used it on have responded eventually and empties themselves on command. Obviously plenty of praise...

    Liquid alternative to Noroclav tablets

daveywhippet, we had tried cheese before as well as many other treats / food but from then on if she knew we were not trying to fool her she would take any tablet. She was a very bright dog that often used her brain to outwit the two border collies we had at the time. And any dog that can do...

    Liquid alternative to Noroclav tablets

Obviously this will not help you at all but your story of giving tablets reminded me of a Mini Daccy we had years ago, she was a real pain to give tabs, to no matter what we tried hiding them in she always took it ate the treat and spit the tab out. Finally one day my wife being exasperated...

Not peeing in front of anyone

We were lucky in one way with that Sheltie although she would happily take treats it was praise and fussing that meant the most to her and its a lot easier to give verbal praise while she was doing it. As to long term effects, all her life if she came across someone carrying a stick, and it...

Not peeing in front of anyone

nottstrigger, as it was about 50 yrs ago my recall is a bit vague but I do not think it took her long say a couple of days before she quite happily pooed normally. Although as I said ever after she did look for praise on completion.

Not peeing in front of anyone

The first rescue dog we had, a lovely Sheltie, wouldn't at first poo when we were with her. We decided to try to get her round from this, we thought she had most likely been told off for pooing when she was a pup, so we took her out on lead first thing in the morning. After a time we could tell...

    The Dog Cafe

I have long thought that the idea of dog license should be reinstated, but with an important change. It should be similar to a driving license, that is before any one bought a dog they had to pass a test to prove they were able to be in charge of one. Obviously if brought in it would cut the...

    The Dog Cafe

JudyN, unfortunately I have no family living near, my son is over 200 miles away. But I could easily employ a dog walker if necessary. After an op on my leg I couldn't take Folly out for about three weeks and I used a walker for her not very successfully though, (not the walkers fault), all...

RGC, yes to me the dogs wellbeing is the top priority which is why I do not think a younger dog would be suitable for me. I am fortunate in that I have a more than adequate pension hence a charity covering costs is neither here nor there for me. Anyway thanks all for your suggestions I will add...

    The Dog Cafe

Suggestions please, First my situation: I am 79, basically healthy but with a bad leg / foot. I have one dog, Folly she is nearly 14 and is quite healthy. She is a real lovely, friendly dog and a brilliant companion. Now obviously one of us will go first and leave the other, if I go, my son has...

    Rocket in leafy salads.

I for one have never worked out why people want to fry air, but then I guess it would make loosing weight easy, a plate full of fried air must be low calorie.

    Look at these Speedsters

Hemlock, I have only seen that sort of race ending with Terrier racing. Over quite a few years being involved with Whippet racing the end when they go on to the lure is the norm, but note they wear muzzles and the dogs are only interested in the lure not attacking each other. My guess is their...

    Dog Insurance Help

Done the survey but the main thing that would concern me about this scheme is that their are some breeds that are likely to incur frequent vet bills. At present their insurance reflects this, but if they joined this scheme then their high costs would be shared to owners with healthier breeds.
