NEVER give ibuprofen. It's a common cause of acute renal failure and death in animals - one of the top 5 causes of poisoning cases seen by UK vets. In fact really you should only ever give a human painkiller under specific instruction from a vet.
And  to whoever thinks vets just...
Young cat in good health = low risk. Young cat with history of urinary problems = mild increase in risk. I would run bloods.
Old cat with dental problems = moderate risk, definitely run bloods.
The decision on whether to use fluids may be made on the basis of the bloos results but beware...
Liver function tests performed without consent? Without any indication it was required? Totally unjustified and extremely bizarre. Sounds very fishy to me.
Seroconversion tests? Did they "try to make you have one" or just offer you it? And I know on a lot of dog forums people would be...
OK masta, you can outpatronise me. :D
Posh cars and shiny premises tend to indicate a good practice with healthy turnover, which tends to indiciate sustainable income over a long period. Which tends to be seen in practices with high standards and bonded, loyal clients.
Our practice is...
Oh masta pet, you miss my point.
Although it might be nice to sell up, move away from the area I love and find a similarly rewarding job with a toddler and my pets in tow, we vets mostly do our jobs because we love them 8)
My boss has got it made then masta. Almost 5 years of experience under my belt, no private car, no fuel allowance, no accommodation, no professional fees and I still get paid less than 30k. I graduated with a personal debt in excess of £20k and I haven't made much of an inroad into that.
A...
Bestie I am sorry that I went off at a tangent there. I am a vet and find it frustrating when people are given inappropriate advice on forums when really they need to be asking these questions of their own vet, who knows the details of the case. It also makes me sad that people feel they have...
Interesting reading, jayp, but I can't find any peer-reviewed articles
Also, it is quite clearly quoted "Dietary protein restriction is appropriate in renal failure when the disease has become severe. Restriction of protein is based on the appearance of clinical signs. It has been...
Hi Bestie. :)
Good quality food is important, as jayp says, but controlling the protein levels is just as important because protein metabolism in the body leads to production of waste products. In a normal dog, these waste products are filtered from the blood by the kidneys. In a dog with...
I came because I had a nagging suspicion that I might have been unclear - to clarify: an injectable version of ivermectin (we use Panomec) can be given orally to treat demodectic mange. I also should have mentioned that this treatment is inadvisable in collies and collie crosses.
Although Advocate has a licence for Demodex, like Claire in practice I haven't found it to be effective. So far the dermatologists I have spoken to about it are pretty negative too :(
Ask your vet about using injectable ivermectin. It is off-licence but can be very effective in cases in which Aludex is failing. However, some cases really can't be treated satisfactorily.
Benzyl benzoate will not work, nor will Thornit. Demodex mites live within the surface layer of the...
I should have known sticking my nose in here for 2 minutes would result in me finding a post I couldn't help replying to!
1) Hard to say from a photo but it looks like a suture reaction, and if it is I guarantee within a couple of days it'll be a million times better.
2) Extremely unlikely...
