Walking my three whips through a park yesterday, on their leads, and we see a loose dog in the distance. Loose dog sees us and heads our way at speed, well as fast as it could go anyway. Tyg always freaks out when approached like that if he is on a lead  so I put myself in front of my three.

Meanwhile the dogs dozy owner has woken up to what is happening and she and her two young children are calling his name as she heads my way too. I'm thinking "that doesn't look like she expects him to come back to her, she is having to come get him", so I stand my ground and as he reaches us say shoo. But he just circles me and darts in at my guys ... no obvious agression, but his tail isn't wagging either. Tyg is now very frightened and starts thrashing about on his lead and whimpering and snarling (he got like this after being attacked while on lead as a pup) :(

Finn at this point, as I would expect from my top dog, lets this other dog know in no uncertain terms that it isn't welcome. It does back off a few feet, but then comes right back in again. So I've got Taran barking now (he doesn't need much of an excuse), Tyg flailing and freaking out, and Finn basically saying bog off you blighter in a very assertive way. And this other dog just repeats the circling and darting in, only now it's growling and snapping as well  And we repeat again, a couple more times, before the owner, all apology, arrives and shamefacedly removes it.

And why is this tale worth the repeating. Because the dog she was removing was what looked like a springer x choc lab puppy ! ("I'm sorry she said, but he's only a baby, he's only 4 mths). I have never before seen a young pup not immediately submit when an entire adult male gives it what for. It clearly hadn't been trained or socialised  and I'm guessing she is going to have a major problem on her hands when it is bigger. Just hoping we never meet it again.

hope your boys are all ok Annie ;) , i hate it when that happens...i took mums 4 up the park the other day (dont usually see anyone else) but this guy who lives next to the park...(well its the kids playing feild at my daughters school), brings his MASSIVE gsd in and is trying to look all smart with how good its recall is by letting it get as close to my 4 on the leads...i asked him to call the dog away to get a reply of "those little dogs wont worry him" hello you prat... they will kill him if i let them off and thats what il be doing if he gets any closer....he then proceeded to follow me around the park...with his dog crapping all over the place and he didnt even have a poo bag to clean it up   ( that really gets my back up) needless to say i marched over poo bag in hand and told him to clean up

in the end he got the hint and went away....maybe its was the "peppermint poo police" that put him off...

sounds a nightmare Annie! Hope you never run into them again, its very worrying indeed if it was actually just 4 months to be that sure of itself and dominant.

Hope your dogs are ok. This is one of my pet hates, ignorant people allowing their off lead dogs to approach others that are on the lead!! Rifle, having been attacked as a pup, gets quite fearful and a bit snappy if he is approached by a strange dog and is on the lead. The same people would be very upset if their dog got bitten as a result.

PMSL @ 'Peppermint Poo Police'!!!

That is a nightmare situation, Annie

It always worries me when they react as Tyg does, backward flipping makes it very easy to slip their collars and that is why I am eternally grateful to whoever invented the martingale collar - mine don't go out without one on

Hope your three recovered quickly after said puppy was removed!!!

How annoying for you, it is quite surprising that a young dog wouldn't back down and was so confident even when told off by yours. Hope you don't come across them again, especially when it is fully mature. Ever since Penny got attacked last year I am always ultra wary of dogs approaching her off lead if she is on hers. When I was out walking with her at the weekend I had her on the lead for a bit when I saw a large dog coming, the owners did call it back but when it ignored them they called it an inappropriate name. It had a very dominant stance and sniffed her face when she sniffed back it turned on her, luckily no damage done.

Must be something in the air as me and Vicky had similar today.

Decide we'll have a day at beach, gets there and the main entrance is closed for 'sand resurfacing' WTF?!!

So we decide we'll have to park up and rather than take small numbers of dogs free running at a time we have to take the whole gang through the dunes to get to the beach. Start leashing up and we see a dalmation walk past next minute a woman pulls up in her car asking if we've seen dalmation, we tell her we've just seen him go left. She then tells us the dog is deaf. Now maybe I'm being a bit critical but if I lost a deaf dog, the last thing I'd do is go driving off, I'd wait where we set off (which is why the sensible dog was pottering about in the car park while she took off up the road)

Then a ranger comes out and says 'oo you've got a lot of dogs'' so we explain the situation about why we're having to take so many out in one go. She then goes on about us having them all running off to which we explain we've come lots of times, know the rules where the dogs can go off lead and that's where we'll be going and even so we're not dumb enough to let a pile of dogs go off all in one go cos it's dangerous, she then starts harping on about them fouling, I dutifully produce a wad of poo bags and basically feel very annoyed that just because we have more than one dog we must be a pair of irresponsible dog owners.

We get to the beach, dogs have their run arounds with a frisbee and we head back. Next min big black staffy cross comes sauntering over. Shouts to owner can you call your dog back, woman stands their looking like a knob. Dog is now infront of ours, hackles up and ours are getting agitated, Vicky shouts (quite firmly) get your dog on a lead now! Woman walks slowly over like there's all the time in the world. Dog is now going at ours and ours are obviously kicking off and I can see fur's going to be flying any mo. Only thing I could think of was to chuck the dogs frisbee and thankfully it worked and the dog went after it.

She eventually gets dog on lead then walks over to me with frisbee and aggresive dog in tow. Taking into consideration now that the woman truly is an idiot I tell her to drop the frisbee rather than walk over with demented dog. She then starts complaining about being shouted at so I give her an earfull about her dog being out of control and as such showing aggresion I could perceive it as threatening and it would fall under the dangerous dogs act. She see's her ass and then is dutifully dragged through the dunes by a dog she can barely hold onto whilst I try and calm Vicky down who's ready for smacking someone!!

I'm begining to wonder if K9 is becoming therapy for those unfortunates who encounter idiots and need to vent their spleens!! (w00t)

Well , spring is in the air ,

So I guess we will be hearing of much more of these incidents about stupid dog folk . March/April/May always seems the worst time for these things happening.

 Perhaps we need an 'On the Couch' section to provide counselling and somewhere to vent for those who have such experiences, I think there may well be a demand! :D

We had the same a few weeks ago with a beagle (8 month old) all the way down the bloody footpath......she was on lead and the owner was calling his dog who was ignoring him......gypsy is very timid when on the lead and was getting very fed up with it...i shouted to the bloke who kept bleedin smiling at me

Finally Gyps had enough and did what i have never seen her do before and bared her teeth and went for the beagle just as the owner caught up with us...he then told me my dog should be muzzled, for trying to attack his baby

offered him a few choice words and left....

seems there are plenty of folk out there that really have no idea what they are doing !!!

Gypsy being timid on the lead comes from being jumped on by 2 two collies who were out of control....she has now started barking at every dog we pass when she is on the lead !!!

It's so annoying isn't it?

Parks are notorious areas for dog conflict  I use our local one every day and have had to work out a system for coping with such confrontations. Fred is let off the lead because he copes better like this. He has always been a nervous dog but experience (at last!) has taught him to stay calm as he can't run fast these days and he knows he can no longer 'protect' us (which he mistakenly thought he had to do). I keep Stanley on the lead and if it looks like an attack is imminent I scoop him up with his harness out of harm's way. I know this isn't desirable, but he does seem to attract some negative attention from other dogs. Quite often I try and diffuse the situation by saying hello to the trouble-making dog in a welcoming, cheery voice, stopping briefly and then carrying on as normal. I'd say it works 8 times out of 10. It's a ruddy nuisance, and it's yet another reason I daredn't get more than two dogs now, because I don't think I could deal with these conflicts, having to exercise my dogs in a small park everyday (until I can escape to the hills at weekends!).

I'd hate to see 'dogs on leads' enforcements in parks, because there are a lot of well behaved dogs who need off lead exercise. Indeed, we fought the last one the local council tried to impose, but there will always be folk who think their dog is just being friendly when it is in fact out of control!!

Its strange too how the weather has a big impact on whos walking and where....

Where I live in the winter...I only pass one or two folks each day...and I go out in hail, rain or shine....but as soon as the weather picks up

the world and his wife are out walking so to speak.....dogs off leads...dogs out of control and loads of strangers in the area who come in cars

and park up to walk the dogs.

At least when you know who you will be coming across, and which dogs are out you can get to know them all or hopefully try.

Some people though are just impossible !!! ..not the dogs to blame at all.

Fine weather dog walkers!!! Pain in the but they are. They always look so surprised when you ask them to control their dog don't they?

Dogs have to on their leads in our local park except for once fenced off area which is the designated dog exercise area. We have idiots who bring their manic, mental, unsocialised dogs in - to use our nice friendly socialised dogs as guinea pigs! The problem is that nobody will take charge of "policing" the pen as we call it. The dog wardens say it's the parkies and the parkies say that it's the police... :(

Luckily I rarely need to bother with parks living surrounded by so much open land ... I had just thought it would be nice for an (unmuddy) change. Won't be going again anytime soon! I do feel for those who have little choice but to use public parks.

My sort of walks.....when I dont pass a soul... much prefer it that way....maybe Im just anti-social.... :D

My usual daily walk is along the canal towpath. The direction I normally choose to go doesn't seem popular with dog walkers, so we rarely see anyone. That is how I like it too Janice. I think I am a bit anti-social  , but I love the peace and tranquility of being alone with just the dogs for company. :huggles:

Exactly the same here where we normally walk, there are a few of us who are there every day whatever the weather, all know each others dogs and never have any problems. As soon as the weather improves my morning walk gets earlier and earlier so that I can avoid all the visitors! I am definitely a little anti-social I suspect!

Absolutely ... best walks/most walks the only human around is me  (and Ted of course if he's home).
