Cesar Millan

I didn't see all of it so can't really comment, but the one thing I did hear was CM state that his programme was not a 'How to' guide and that he would always advise viewers to consult a professional. I don't always agree with his methods but I do think that, if you cut through the hyped up mumbo jumbo about 'energy', that the tv producers have used as his signature a lot of what he says amounts to common sense. Yes, he probably has been seduced by money but I think there are few people, particularly from his background, who would have managed to resist that.

I doubt that there is any 'magic' solution to stop a dog pulling on the lead and feel that it is unfair to judge him on his response to that. He knew nothing about the dogs or their lifestyle and came up with the first thing I am sure most people would try i.e not to pull against the dog, something that applies to horses as well, I learned from a young age that there was no point in getting into a 'tug of war', if you increase the tension then the animal will pull harder.

I am no expert but I am sure that what works for one dog does not always work for another, if there was a 'one size fits all' quick fix solution then surely it would not be such a common problem that dog trainers encounter. I wish I had seen the whole programme, not because I am a fan of Cesar Millan, but I do find it interesting listening to different views.

He wasn't on for long. Just the usual promoting of his tour kind of thing.

It's all very well for him to say his programme is not a "how to" guide but people will copy his methods. If he is pinning dogs down until they go blue, or stringing them up by choke chains until they faint, then people will think that is acceptable behaviour towards dog.

We moved away from this style of training years ago and it just seems such a shame that he has brought it all back again. Of course the public love it, after all we used to watch cock fighting and bear baiting.

As I said in my post, I am not a Cesar Millan fan particularly, I certainly don't condone any extreme physical methods of training but they are not the only methods he uses. I think I used the phrase 'a lot of what he says amounts to common sense' and I stand by that. As an example, when he talks about the way people approach a dog etc, if they are fearful then the dog will sense that (as would most animals), that to me is just common sense.

Yes, there will always be numptys who think they can watch a TV programme and become an expert (I think I'm repeating myself here from a previous post :wacko: ) I don't think CM alone can be blamed for resurrecting a particular method of dog training, I have seen far worse on Dog Borstal but nobody appears to be 'blaming' the trainers on there. There will always be people who believe that they need to be physical in order to achieve results, I personally don't but that doesn't mean to say I can't be interested in some of the techniques he uses. The public love drama, that is true, but to imply that those who watch programmes such as 'The Dog Whisperer' would be the same type of person who would have watched cock fighting or bear baiting is perhaps a little extreme.

Top answer i love it !!!!!! I think human nature is such that we build people up and idolise them- and then systematically destroy them. No wonder i prefer dogs.

I like watching these sort of programmes but always wonder what doesn't actually make it to the final edit.

just thought i would add my bit to this debate, i also didnt know cesar was contraversial.

i started watching his programmes a few years ago and was amazed by his work. it didnt seem real to be able to solve problems that quick so decided to give some of them a go. my old dog harry (possibly a lurcher type) has always pulled on the lead (even pulled me over once) so i started there with his techniques first taking control of the door, ensuring that harry was calm before going out, taking calm assertive atitude while on the walk, the collar high up on the dogs neck (like the illusion collar he uses). it worked, in a matter in minutes harry had been transformed.

unfortunately i cannot get cesars techniques to cure my chihuahuas anxious aggression to work. i keep trying but nothing works,

after having read some of the replies to this post i will look at other trainers but i do love cesar, wish i could afford to go and see him at newcastle arena
