Curbing Dog Access To Beaches In Northumberland

Northumberland County Council are considering a dog ban on beaches in the North East.

The proposals have been made available to residents through the local press, but the many dog owners who visit the area have not been given the chance to make their voices heard.

having children I fully support bans on dogs on beaches, or as cornwall does have dedicated dog beaches but unfortunatly owners fail to respect the no go beaches so you can understand why councils feel the need to impose outright bans.

nothing worse than a child playing in the sand to come across a pile of crap left by an irrisponsible owner.

Having children I don't support the ban of dogs on beaches . Yes there are irresponsible dog owners who walk away and leave their dog mess on beaches and that really is annoying but the vast majority of debris on beaches has nothing to do with dogs . Glass bottles , whole and broken , dirty nappies yuk ! Used condoms , syringes , cans and all sorts of plastic .Also all the bits of nets , fishing line and all the other stuff from the fishing industry . Maybe it's humans who should be banned from the beaches :wacko:

I can't believe anyone would gladly punish the majority for the minority's actions!

And I agree I worry more about all the human waste on the beach and sewage washing up in the sea before dog muck!

I live in Northumberland and walk regularly at Druridge Bay and Cresswell. There will always be irresponsible dog owners and it is because of them that we are all going to suffer by being deprived of access this wonderful area.

However, by far the worst nuisance in the area are the people who leave their litter, remnants of barbeques (including still smouldering disposable ones) broken glass etc, not to mention the human excrement deposited in the dunes along with brightly coloured loo roll! :x Perhaps they could start by fining people for fouling the area too!

Unfortunately I have seen this too. I once had the shame of walking past a small dog-free family beach area with someone who asked me "what's wrong?, don't you ever let your dog off for a run?" His dog then ran and dumped near where kids were building sand castles then jumped into the middle of a family having a picnic. I felt ashamed for his lack of consideration. There were nearby areas for dogs to run but his arrogance was the type that gets all dog walkers a bad reputation. :rant:

We see this everey year when in cornwall, signs everyware saying no dogs yet irrisponsible owners allow their dogs to run amock, time for the police to clamp down and hit those hard who ignore the signs.

i've lost track of the times weve been harrassed by dogs owned by idiots on beaches that exclude dogs there are plenty of beaches about which dogs are allowed on but we stay away from those as who wants to sit surrounded by dog crap.

I wouldn't have a problem with the beaches, or the more popular ones in Northumberland, being 'closed' to dogs at certain times of day in the peak season. I don't walk on the beaches at the busier times anyway as it is a potential minefield with children, kites, footballs etc. At Cresswell there is also a large commercial caravan park, and it would probably be beneficial if, at the very least, some of its' visitors were forced to keep their dogs on leash at busier times. Being confronted by a couple of Neapolitan Bull Mastiffs, out of control (possibly their first 'off lead' experience in a year or even in their lifetime) when you are there with a toddler and a Whippet (on leash) is not my idea of fun!!

I'm a Mum, an Auntie and have worked with children. In that capacity I have no desire to sit on a beach filled with dog c**p, but similarly I have no desire to step in human faeces, have my dog injured by broken glass, disposable bbq's etc. If we were all more responsible then none of this legislation would be necessary. Oh, and the National Trust could help by making more bins available....but they say they are not 'aesthetically pleasing'. Not a problem to me....place poo bags in carrier bag, take home and place in bin, but it clearly is for some, so they hang their poo bags on the fence!!! :wacko: And then wonder why we are to be banned from the beaches!!

What a feeble argument on behalf of the NT. Litter certainly isn't aesthetically pleasing either and is dangerous to wildlife. I'm sure they could put some sympathetically placed bins around. They just don't want the responsibility of emptying them I guess! Having said that I'm still prepared to carry my litter home. I've been thinking about getting some of those 'Dicky bags'. Not cheap but it helps you to carry dog poo bags in a discrete and hygenic way until you can dispose of the poo bags.

Short sighted, stupid council. Will they reverse their knee jerk decision when guest houses and hotels start closing because the dog fraternity stop visiting and spending their money.
