Just encourage him to do all the things he likes especially if it involves going on a holiday or weekends away .

Then ask for another dog . when he says No just point out all the things he does and that you never complain about .

I just got number 5 ( OH is going to New Zealand next year for the rugby world cup ! ) ;)

My question must be suffering from invisiblitis :ermm:
bump
"Do you mean you'd love an iggy whippet cross or you'd love either one, an iggy or a whippet? If it's the first, do people deliberately cross them often?
Sorry Kirislin I would rather a iggy whippet cross. I dont know how often they are crossed but I have seen them advertised. Im quite new to this myself so I don't know an awful lot but I have seen a couple of ads. Sorry wasn't ignoring you only just saw your message as a quote. Cheers Sue

P.s what does bump mean?
thanks for answering :) bump is just to bring the question back up to the top.

My first whippet was, I believe, a whippet iggy cross. Very uncommon over here (Australia). She was my first sighthound and in fact I'd hardly ever even seen one before. I assumed she was a whippet and only after she died and when I started looking for a replacement I realised there were none like her. It was years after though that I twigged she was more iggy in bone structure and personality. I loved her so much, even now almost 27 later I still sort of crave to have her back, even though common sense tells me she'd be long dead from old age had she not been tragically killed.

Sadly there are lots of people deliberately breeding IG x Whippet crosses in the UK now. A subject of much k9 debate in the past, so I shall leave it at that.

I'm not sure why IggyxWhippet breeding gets such a bad reaction from some - no one moans about whippets crossed with greyhounds like a lot of the non ped racers, or any other lurchers who are all crosses at the end of the day. I'd say it's more personalities people are getting at, rather than the breeding. I love small whippets, and all of mine are under 19" tall. One of my latest additions, bred by my friend from her small bitch, and my Sweep is only just over 14lbs at 8 months, and I'm not sure how tall, but she is very small. She could be mistaken for an IggyxWhippet - and she is perfect! As I see it an IggyxWhippet has the qualities of both breeds, but would be a bit more robust than an Iggy, and maybe smaller than most whippets. So I would say just as desirable

I'll take some new ones and post them Diane - she is sooo cute. We love her to bits. We are now torn over her racing name as we both like Small and Mighty, but I have also thought of iCandy. I have booked it with Judy, and Steve is coming round to it. He wanted to keep Mighty in the name though - so we are in discussion ;-)

Aww June I love the name ICandy...its brilliant and so is Candy too....

Can't fault it you guys have some really lovely hubbys.
Sarah that was soo helpful. I think my OH would be the same. At the moment he's doing the quiet thing which is usually a precursor to me getting! I think his concern is that a) Duke is soo heavy handed (pawed) because he's such a big whippet and a little bit clumsy :clown: , bless him b) our house isn't big enough (2 bed terrace) and c) The cost in vets bills Duke has just cost us £350  OK well get it back with insurance but all he can see is the initial outlay. Having said that he's quiet which is a good sign and he is usually good as gold which is why when he says no I listen. If (WHEN) we go to 3 I think it will have to be an iggy cross whippet otherwise darling Dukey may break it, bless him! doesn't stop me wanting though and whatever it is I'll love it!! cheers sue x

P.s I used to paraglide until i lost my nerve!
we live in a two bed terrace and we have five dogs....space isn't really an issue unless everyone piles into our tiny galley kitchen...there are simply hounds dotted about the house...as long as you can provide plenty of exercise, living space won't be an issue....I love being outside so our backdoor is generally open in all weathers so the dogs can go out if they please.

Aww that is so sad :( . They certainly make a space in yer heart don't they   . Well lots of people have asked us if Dotty is an iggy and I didn't know what one was so looked them up and have since met a few and I can see where they are coming from because she is small but not quite as small. I think may be i want an iggy whippet so its a similar size to Dotty also less Likely to get broken by our fairly footsteps adorable buffoon Duke :clown: x

My little cute iCandy and her fat lardy brother Barney...... the photos aren't good, I used my phone and the shutter speed must be rubbish cos any little movement they make comes out blurred. I tried to get them together so you can see the difference in size :teehee:

He's 21 and a half pounds but quite plump. I think he will end up 20-21lbs unless he puts on a growth spurt. I'm not sure of Yogi's weight now, but I think Barney is the biggest of the litter. Strange to remember he was the smallest born, and Julie always made sure he had the teat with the most milk as she worried about him being small. Sweep was the smallest born too, but ended up the biggest.

Is Candy a Whiggy June? She is lovely, she looks cream rather than white to me. If she is I might have to go over there and steal her away.

No she's a full pedigree whippet, but comes from a background of small racing whippets. Her grandmother is our Dangermouse, and she is only 15lbs, her great grandmothers on both sides were 16lbs. I like them small :huggles: Candy is white with fawn/cream markings. If you have smaller whippets, you can fit more in (w00t)

I would urge you to read as much of the iggie part of the forum as you can manage, especially the pinned topics and some of the older topics, most of the current ones aren't really discussion threads and its difficult to find anything other than cute stuff - its lovely to read though, and as an iggie owner myself, there is no denying that they are gorgeous to look at! ;)

I would advise anyone to take plenty of time to consider the pros and the cons. You aren't just adding one to your pack, you are increasing it by 50%. Every addition to your home changes the pack dynamics. Lots of people find that their pair of dogs turn in to a pack when it increases to 3, regardless of what breed you are dealing with. Would a light boned dog cope with your bigger dogs? Would you cope with having to watch your bigger dogs around the smaller ones all the time?

People quite often think that iggies are just small whippets. In fact they are a toy breed, with all the demands a toy breed brings with them. They are also like a sight hound, they will run flat out, almost as fast as a whippet, just for the fun of it. This can be an issue if they are running with bigger dogs, they don't have the substance of a similar sized dog like a terrier.

However, what you might not be aware of is that iggies do suffer from a range of health issues - some cosmetic, such as tusk teeth, some horrific, such as epilepsy and leg fractures. :(

As for cross breeds - well, thats up to you. I personally don't see anything wrong with cross breeds if the product serves a purpose, if they can be an improvement on the parents. I love iggies. I love whippets. I have both. And I don't see any reason to cross them. A big dog and a little dog doesn't mean a medium sized pups, it means some will be like mum and some will be like dad. I don't want a whippet sized dog with the iggie mentality - they are pretty full on!!! And I certainly don't want my iggie sized bitch giving birth to whippet sized pups!

Of course, for every voice of caution, there will be a dozen tellling you to go for it! But I'm assuming that if you asked they question, its cos you'd like to hear more than one point of view

Enjoy your research and good luck with whatever you decide to do :luck:
