Waiting For Our New Arrival,and I Need Advice Please Xx

As others have said, don't worry about the cat. Puppies 'adopt' them and soon learn a bit of respect after the first biff on the nose. I have two cats, the feisty female won't stand any nonsense but gets on well with the three dogs as long as they don't overstep the mark. The huge black male is the soppiest wus you could ever wish to meet. :mellow: Loves the dogs, they take it in turns to groom each other and, most of the time, he is curled up asleep in the middle of them. :huggles: Enjoy your puppy and look forward to seeing the pics.

Hi everyone, well our little Winnie has arrived !!! she is adorable, she seems to favour my 5 year old, Max at the moment, she follows him everywhere, im a little worried about tonight as we tried to put her in her crate with the door shut whilst we were in the room and she cried and cried and cried !! im going to feekl awful if she does that when we are in bed , what should i do ?? xx

I would love to give you sound advice but to be honest I was absolutely rubbish at ignoring the crying and to this day Oscar sleeps in his bed next to ours!

So glad that you finally have little Winnie......welcome to the wonderful world of whippets!!!

try waiting until she has crashed out from playing and place her in the crate and push the door to, when she wakes up, calmly say hello and pick her up and take her straight out for a pee, when it's your bedtime wait until she's had a pee and sleepy put her in the crate and get quiet -tv and most lights off then sneak out when she's not awake, make sure she's nice and snuggled up or she might wake cold in the night then she'll cry and pee or poo

Hi, thank you so much for the advice, i will try it tonight, she has cried for the pass two nights, she does not mind going in her crate i think it is because she is on her own, do you think its ok just to have one whippet ? when i leave her in the morning to take my little boy to school she cries but when i get back i peep through the window and she is fast asleep and as soon as she hears me she cries again, will she get better at night time when she is used to being with us ? we have only had her for two days. Sorry for all the questions but you are all so helpful on here. xxxxxxxxxxx

My Mae doesn't make any fuss when I go out to work or when she goes to bed, but cries like a baby if she knows I am in the house and she can't get to me, she cries when she wants attention, feeding, cuddles well anything really. It can be really hard to ignore but if you establish the ground rules in the early stages you will get less problems later, keep on leaving her for short periods and it will get better.

Do you leave any treats for your pup when you leave? I have always given Mae a treat when I go out or at bed time right from day one so she quickly began to associate me leaving as a good thing rather than bad (she is always happy as long as she is eating). It also gives the dog something to do if you put the treats in a kong, Mae always likes some hot dog sausage, apple and a very small amounts of that soft cheese you get in a tube (be careful too much may upset your pups tummy), if you don't have a kong or for something different for your pup just through some of her puppy food around the floor, you will be surprised how long they can spend picking it up, great game! The only thing with all of this they obviously cant be shut in the crate.

At night just a biscuit in your pups basket may help to settle and establish a bed time routine (just make sure the treats you give are appropriate to the age of the dog, sounds silly but when Mae was little some well meaning person tried to give her an adult dog treat and I thought she would break all of her teeth before I could take it off her).

As for crying at night I had 2 nights of it when I first brought Mae home, however I discovered on night 3 that her problem was that she hated her crate, I put a basket by the radiator and she slept right through. Do you leave any heating on? It is turning really cold and I remember having to leave heating on for Mae when she was really little, they no longer have the heat from cuddling into litter mates so it may be that you need to provide a little extra warmth until your puppy is a bit bigger.

It is still early days so you don't have anything to worry about and you will find out what works best for you and your pup, for me it was just trial and error.

She is probably just testing the boundaries as much as being lonley.

What you give into now, you will probably have to live with

Remember, she is crying for attention, not because she is in pain (How cruel and I :- ?)

A well wrapped hot water bottle in her bed for a week will probably be comforting if she is missing her siblings.

My whippets have all been older rescues but they cried at night of a while too once they are made to sleep with the other dogs and not in a crate in our room. Firm reassurance that you are still about and then letting them get on with it is the best policy.

She will soon get the hang of what is expected of her.

We got ours 2 and a half weeks ago (at 8 weeks old). The first night we tried shutting him in the crate and waking up to each cry but it was every 2 hours and I was so tired the next day we decided just to leave the door open with the toilet pad in the corner of the room the next night and hope for the best - the floor was a bit of a minefield the next morning (and still is each morning to be honest, because with no garden we're just biding our time until we can take him out for walks and do "house training" as opposed to "toilet training") He stopped crying in the night after the second night I think. I've recorded the audio of what he does when we leave him home alone (not in crate) and he whines for 30 seconds or so after 5 minutes, plays for 10 mins then sleeps the rest of the time. We've only left him for a maximum of 3 hours and he was asleep when we got back in. I quite often shut the door and go into another room and he still whines quite a lot at that because he knows I'm there and that he could be playing with me! From 7am he whines and scratches at our bedroom door and sometimes goes back to bed if I shock him as he scratching by whipping the door open and giving him a big growled "NO!" - probably a little too heartfelt sometimes, morning grumps!! I can't offer any advice obviously as this is my first time with a puppy and I think I feel the same as you - just offering my nearly parallel experience in case it's of any help/comfort.

I got my two dogs as pups this time two years ago. The first night my son and I slept downstairs with them - I read somewhere on here that it helps them bond with you. We put blankets over their crate and made it really cosy - they even had a hot water bottle wrapped in a pillow case to snuggle with. For the next month or so they slept in their crate (but didn't ever really go in it to sleep in the day - they just got on the sofa) but then one day they just squealed and panicked when they went in. Grover was in real danger of hurting himself by getting his mouth caught around the bars. We took the crate upstairs and put it next to our bed and they spent a few nights sleeping in it but then didn't like it again. We sold it not long afterwards! They now sleep in their beds in our bedroom (although they usually sneak into our teenage son's double bed with him during the night which we really don't mind ) We did have some quite amazing chewing incidents when they were younger becasue they weren't crated but as I don't plan to have pups again I don't think I would ever buy another. They did spend a month or two sleeping on our bed but they are really big whippets and we were waking up with back problems lol so they are not allowed in now (though Roscoe sneaks in for a quick cuddle in the morning!)

When we got our 3 yr old rescue girl a couple of months ago we just took her bed upstairs when we went to bed, she got straight in it and snuggled. For the first couple of nights she needed to go out during the night (she wasn't housetrained when we got her) but after that she slept straight through. They will wake up and cry in the night if they are cold but we just put their blankets back over them and they go to sleep again. We haven't tried doggy pyjamas as I'm sure they wouldn't last five minutes before the dogs ripped them off each other!

good news we had a better night with Winnie last night, :thumbsup: she still cried but not as much as the other nights, she seems to be settling in really well and adjusting to our life, she seems so happy, we have been to the vets today for her first injections and she didnt even flinch ! xx my husband and i cant beleive how good she is we are just waiting for something to go wrong as it seems to good to be true, is this how whippets are ? xx )

you will probably find she will gradually improve at night. When we had Dotty at 10 weeks She was soooo good o i couldn't believe it either. No crying even the first night ( spent it in the kitchen in her covered crate). I Spent the first week at home gradually increasing the time she was left home alone every day from day 3 until by day 7 she was on her own for 4 hours. When we first started leaving her i used to leave her with a kong stuffed with 2 markies and cream cheese, Just before I left i'd put the radio on and give the kong and goodies (used as a distraction) then ignore her and walk out the door ( so she'd realise my leaving was no big deal) Never heard a peep. When I came home she'd go mad with excitement I again ignored her until she'd calmed down ( this was sooo hard all I wanted to do was cuddle her). We have never had a problem leaving her and she still gets a markie when I go out We now have 2 Dukie he gets the same and they are both fine.

The cat she stands her ground and after both Dotty and Duke being gently batted on the nose by her they leave her alone. Cats outside thats another story they will chase! The only problem we ever had with Dotty was she would chew anything and everything until we discovered citronella oil diluted with water and put in an old window cleaner sprayer, works a treat when all chewable areas are sprayed just before going out, mind you smells horrible for a few mins! We did puppy classes and socialisaion classed with both Dotty and Duke which work wonders for their interaction skills and manners.

Whippets are fab and I think your pup already sounds like a little diamond! o :wub: I think you'll end up with 2 before long!! (w00t)

Good luck with your new addition! I recently got my first Whippet and I have had no problems with cats at all. She is an angel with my housecat, who is definitely the boss, and has never chased the cats at the farm where we keep the horses, in fact they always come over to say hello and weave through her legs which she seems to love. Don't worry! Whippets are great! x

Ahhh Dotty and Duke sound lovely, Winnie is crated but i know what you mean about the chewing, she has a go at everything !this is our 6th night with her and she still whines when i put her in her crate but she stops after about 10mins and is quiet all night, i do have to work twice a week for 3 hours so Winnie is on her own in her crate but i dont know how she is when i am out, i hope she is ok and not too stressed out :blink: when i get home she is always very excited i dont think she likes to be on her own but im sure she is ok, i wonder if anyone else has only one whippet ?? . ahh don't worry you'll get there! I think dotty was the last of the litter and had been on her own for a little while , that's probably why she didn't whine? Anyway I know its hard but just ignore it and she'll stop when she realizes she's not going to get any attention from it. As for t he chewing yes she did a fair bit of damage but as soon as we started with the citronella it all stopped. Good luck you wont regret getting Winny Promise! :wub: :wub:
