Jonah's teeth are not too good and he will have to go for a scale in 6 months if I can't get rid of the plaque. I've read how good raw chicken wings are for removing plaque and I'm thinking of giving them a go.

I'm just a bit worried about the fact that Muffin tends to swallow chews before he's chewed them properly - Jonah's not so bad - and I'm a bit worried about him choking on them. What do you think? Do you think they'll be OK? Any advice greatly received! :thumbsup:
 
i have 6 whippets that get wings everyday and have had from 12 weeks never choked and have been in perfect health from pups i call that a recommendation :thumbsup:
 
Bill the beagle is notorious for gulping down treats but when he tried chicken wings, he chewed them up properly...just a shame he's allergic to chicken now LOL.

James will play with the chicken wing but just won't eat it LOL.

Give them a try, I'm sure the whippets will enjoy them :)
 
If you are worried then try marrow bones instead. They will really help with the tartar on the teeth. If you go with the wings, then I would hold onto one end the first couple of times to encourage the dog to chew them and not just gulp them down.
 
Mine have wings on a regular basis but Ruby and Frankie both have plaque prone teeth that i have to scrape to keep clean. My sisters dogs chew bones a lot more than mine and they have much better teeth. I just don't think wings take long enough to eat to have a real teeth cleaning benefit.
 
Daisy cannot have Beef or Chicken as she is intolerant of both. Has anyone tried pork ribs?

Would Pork Ribs be safe enough fed raw?

I could try Lamb as she may be OK with that but she is on a Pork diet and that may be the best palce to start.
 
Mine have chicken wings regularly Gillian and I've never had a problem with choking (touch wood...). Rifle has had them from coming to me as a pup but Rosie at 17 months had clearly never seen anything like it when she came to me. I did as someone else suggested and held onto the tip initially, she soon got the hang of it ....

You might also be interested in Stag bars http://www.puredog.co.uk/our-products.php I thought they seemed quite expensive initially but my two love them and they are particularly good for Rosie, who loves to chew on pencils or anything else inappropriate. They last for ages (I leave them available all the time and the dogs just pick them up when they want to) and I've had no problems with them causing upset tummies, they don't smell or make a mess either.
 
I have 2 that will down a chicken wing whole and then they bring it back and this process goes on until its down their necks , the teeth never get used in this instance , so ive stopped giving them wings and have found beef ribs do a better job and they have to chew them .

For some reason Lal, this product reduced me and my colleague at work to complete hysterics (w00t) Didnt stop me ordering though and I'm now lighter by thirty quid. Cheap at twice the price for "All the goodness of antler" :lol: :lol: :lol:

The glossy leaflet that came with them, left on my kitchen worktop, had a similar effect on my son..... He came into the kitchen, glanced at the leaflet and exclaimed............ "SLAGBAR???? What sort of night out are you planning??" :teehee: (w00t) :teehee: (w00t)

He couldn't understand why I fell about laughing, and I'm still teasing him about it some weeks later......... :lol:

After falling about laughing about SLAGBARS and "the goodness of antler" I've just ordered 2 for my dogs. I've never seen these before but willing to give them a try. Thanks for the recommendation :thumbsup:

I do occasionally give mine raw chicken wings but I do worry "just in case/what happens if..." etc. But they are good for teeth cleaning
 
At the risk of further hijacking :clown:

We have a 3ft Ebony elephant in the dining room (an heirloom from the 'old days') It has real Ivory tusks.

You know where I am going ........... :(

Toddy in his early days decided that as if further distressing the mouth height distressed reclaimed pine coffee table was not enough then discovered 'A TUSK'

He has expensive taste (w00t)

As I could not obtain a replacement 5" ivory tusk, I got clever and sanded down and adapted an antler that I found.

By the way if anyone has an old unused 4" - 5" ivory tusk in a drawer (or even a pair :- ) PLEASE LET ME KNOW

Thanks for your comments - I think I'll give the chicken wings a miss because I know I'll worry about them not eating them properly. :blink: I saw your post about the Stag bars (on Facebook?) Lal and was going to give them a try but forgot, so thanks for reminding me. I'm going to order some and see how they get on with them. :thumbsup:
 
mine all get chicken wings too and have done since 8 weeks of age....just cut them with scissors if you are worried about them gulping them whole.

to keep teeth clean I still prefer and good raw marrow bone, or lamb ribs. :thumbsup:
 
Mine get lamb ribs, marrow bones etc as part of their diet as well. I brought the Stag bars in as something inbetween, not really 'food' but longer lasting than the average dog chew, mainly because Rosie will chew anything she shouldn't.... pencils are a favourite, and emery boards :wacko: Abi was less than impressed when Rosie discovered a taste for a brand new Estee Lauder eye pencil that was part of a set I bought her for Christmas...... Rosie can't eat hide type chews as they give her a terrible upset tum :x

I just put a post on one of the Hunting Forums I go on, and a couple of stalkers are going to send me some Red Deer Antler pieces free of charge.
 
I've just ordered some stagbars for the girls, will be interesting to see what they make of them.

Can't you get chicken necks in UK? My dogs love them, although some tried to swallow them whole too! LOl But that is easy fixed, I just hold one end until they start chewing and then I let them have it. Once they learn to chew on them they keep chewing :) I imagine it would be the same with the wings. I also give them whole back bones.
 
Mine have chicken wings as occasional treats. I was worried at first that they would swallow them whole but the majority of the chewed them. I had to watch the old boy Jasper and Zoe as they would swallow them but I just held the end until they started to chew them. Now even the 2 big dogs Zoe and Button will now chew the wings properly. :thumbsup:
