Hi everyone, i mainly post on the pedigree whippet racing forum but would like some advice/opinions on buying drugs from the internet. Before we discovered whippet racing we only ever had rescue dogs. Our oldest boy Max a good old Heinz 57 who is 10 now has developed diabetes has been suffering from cushings disease for a few years. The vet is charging us over £70 for 30 days supply of Vectryl. However i can get it in bulk for less than £40, on the internet a big saving.

The big questions are, is it worth it? Can anyone recommend a website that's provides the correct medicines? Has anyone had any bad experiences? etc. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks for your help in advance

Hi, I buy from http://petmeds.co.uk

Never had any problem with them- much cheaper than the vets, although you may need a prescription for some drugs. The prices vary for prescription charges from one practice to another ;)

Im sure what your dog is on is a prescrided drug, If so you can only get it on the internet with a prescriction from your vet . Some vets will give you a script for 3 months , some may give you one for 6 . but some may want you back in sooner to retest bloods , Whatever, they will probably charge you for a script !!

many folk buy drugs off line, ive had stuff , but not with a scrpit ( luckily I worked for a vets at the time , He HATED giving scrips out, big time LOL, Im so much happier now ive left , but it sure opens your eyes when you work for a vet , just how much stuff really costs etc

I've used vet-medic before online and at shows and they are always very good.

Another company is www.petdrugsonline.co.uk. Ive not used this company so don't know what they are like.

for the drugs you are using i think as previously mentioned you will need a prescription

I've used several online companies without any problems and they are definitely a lot cheaper, I also use them for non prescription things like wormers, with five dogs it makes quite a difference.

I usually use VetUK because Oldies Club get a small percentage of any order placed via the link on our website (http://www.oldies.org.uk/?page_id=534) but for the more expensive medicines it's worth shopping around to find the cheapest, they do vary quite a bit for individual drugs.

You will need to get a prescription from your vet and post it to them before they will process your first order, usually the vet will write a prescription for 3 months at a time then you have to get another prescription written. Vets often charge an 'admin fee' for writing the prescription, so worth finding out how much that will be.

used vetmedic.com two days ago for drontal and frontline it arrived today

I recently used Hyperdrug for wormers and the delivery was very speedy.

Wormers are easy to get, I just had a Pup inoculated, I would have liked to know how much the medication cost, as I could have done this myself, a friend of mine has an old Cat with Diabetes and has to buy animal insulin from the Vet as you need a prescription, he has looked on the web but cant get any,

Years ago I used to keep Pedigree Sheep, so I came under the small Farms, So I would be given medicines, for example a bottle of Penicillin dead cheap, 50 doses in the bottle for all animal use, bought for Sheep but I used to use it on my Whippet X beddy after a days Ratting , imagine what I would have been charged if I took her to a vet for one penicillin injection.

Thank you everybody, i'm going to try bestpets pharmacy.

your spot on there jax, they got a licence to print money

It might be worth mentioning in this thread that not all vets regard lifetime meds as a licence to print money

We're with an independent (peak vets, at woodseats in Sheffield), and they offer discounts for ongoing medication. We have to have metacam available at all times, so we have the tablets for their shelflife, but our vet was trying to work out how to prescribe us the cheaper liquid form instead

some vets needs a pat on the back saying your a good sort, some well they need a jab or two themselves to calm them down a bit lol
