Alan dug a biggish hole on our garden tonight. We finally decided to say enough was enough with Bean and had him pts tonight. He just couldn't overcome this bladder infection and with a possible bladder tumour as well...

Things seemed to be finally going well last week with him having put on weight and being off the AB's for 2-3 weeks then on Saturday he stopped eating again. The infection was back again more AB's prescribed. But he's been on different ones for about 9 months. Some work, some don't work, some work and then they don't work. Last time in the end he had to take 2 different ones and they worked but the infection is back again after only a few weeks of him finishing them.

I couldn't bear to see him turning to skin and bone again and him struggling to pee until it looked like he was trying expell his anus and all the blood and the pain and him just lying around not reacting to anything. All whilst we tried to find an AB that would work this time. So enough of it for him. He is worth so much more than ending his life in that way. I know that some of you have descendants of his and I hope that you have a much pleasure out of them as we had from him. He did everything to the very best of his ability, even if it was cutting the corners on a bend or on a lure course. :teehee: Being show bred he was a heavy dog and we finally were able to get his weight down to 32lbs as a veteran. In his younger days he trialled with a lot of 'naughty' racing bred dogs to try to get them straight and as a racing vet his great heart and refusal to be bested meant that he beat quite a few good racing breds. I will continue to pick my pups based on how I remember him as a 4 week old puppy, as he was what I think a whippet should be like. Stunningly beautiful to look at, brave as they come, never believed in quitting and a total gent to live with. Oh and a very good black!

He passed away peacefully with his head in my hands. The house feels empty tonight which is strange because we have so many dogs and he'd been so still and quiet for so long. A gentleman to the end. Whose end came much too soon. A chunk of my heart has departed with him.

Really sorry to read this , bean as sure left his mark on the track and in our house as we have 2 of his granddaughters , and without him we wouldnt have our 2 gorgeous girls, Millie and Phoebe .

Our thoughts are with you Barbara and Alan x

RIP BEAN you will never be forgotten x

So sorry Barbara and Alan, Bean was always a very special boy to you.

I will never forget taking his dam and his litter to the vet and holding Bean and the others in my hands when he was only 4 hours old.

As you know I wanted to have Bean but I wasn’t allowed!

Rest in peace and free from pain big fellow.

So sorry to hear this Barbara. I know that you and Alan have been doing your best for him for a long time now. The continual re-infections as soon as he came off the antibiotics must have been so disheartening for you.

He was fast for a show-bred too and as you said - a very black sort of black.

Run Free Bean.

So sorry to hear the sad news about Bean. :(

RIP Bean and run free. :huggles:

So sorry to hear about Bean, he was one in a million and always gave his all in everything he did (even if it was thinking "too" much on a bend or lure coursing :D )

R.I.P Bean, go chase the bunnie's, deer and all

So sorry to hear your news Barbara and Alan.

Bean was a great old boy, much loved and cherished.

Maybe Seth went to greet old bean at the pearly gates, two true gents together!

I am very sorry to hear this Barbara. Archie and Bean often raced together as big show boys and Bean was a very polite dog. My heart goes out to you and Alan, you have done the right thing though, the hardest but kindest thing.
