Dog Adoption/foster - N/nw Ireland

Against my better judgement, I have brought home a young mixed breed bitch who was thrown out of a car near my work place. She has mange but is being treated for it. She was very nervous at first, but is improving and I think she has a lovely quiet manner. Colleen is getting her jags, etc. at present, but she could go to a new home from around 20 June (and I personally really need to get her into other care by the end of June because I will be away much of the summer - I already have to make arrangements for my other two dogs though those two will be coming with me on one of my planned travels).

I thought at first that Colleen could be called a lurcher, but now I don't think she qualifies and I am just describing her as a medium-sized mixed breed. See more of her story in the k9 lurcher section, at http://www.k9community.co.uk/forums/index....&st=0&p=453550&

Also - if you are in this area and want a dog quickly, I saw some nice dogs at the Derry City Council dog kennels (pound) when I went to get Colleen. There were three border collie types, all friendly but one heart-achingly so (a lively male who should get plenty of exercise and/or training), a very pretty white and fawn leggy Jack Russell type, and a big, strong - but quiet and calm - Dobermann Pincher. (pound no 028 7126 1414 - just open 10-11 am and 3.30-4.30 pm I think).

They charge 33 pounds which includes a license and a Dogs Trust voucher you can use to cover neutering, vaccinations, flea and worm treatment, and microchipping. Unfortunately, they don't do much to be sure you are prepared for the commitment you take on when rehoming a rescue dog.

Colleen is coming on in leaps and bounds - literally: now that she has her confidence and energy back, Colleen is inclined to jump up but it is easy to curtail her over-enthusiasm. She remains quiet and clean in her kennel run; no longer seems timid even when we go out, hear loud noises, meet new people. She likes to fetch balls and sometimes can catch a tennis ball in the air, but she isn't an obsessive retriever like some dogs. I think she is a quick learner and could do well at obedience and/or agility training. She doesn't get nearly as much attention from me as I'd like to give her, but I do have other dogs to look after and exercise. Unlike the resident house dogs, Colleen even appears to be cat friendly. A grand girl altogether - and if you don't believe me, ask k9er Evie and her young daughters who came to visit us earlier this week.

Colleen deserves a good home and she would repay your kindness.

Colleen is a pure delight of a dog. We took her for a walk and played with her in the yard. She was well mannered onlead, friendly and fun! She got on really well with my two kids (6 & 8) , fetching balls that they threw and allowing them to take them from her mouth to throw them again.

She's a lovable and quick to learn dog that would make someone a lovely pet.

Hopefully I'll get some pics up of her next week!!! o

no leads yet on a long-term home for Colleen

her coat looks nice and glossy now and her hair is growing back; she looks much better than the mangy girl I brought home a few weeks ago

The kids and myself headed over to Macha's today for a visit and to get a few pics of Colleen.

She has come on so well and really starting to look good. She's great with the kids and good onlead. She even had a little offlead time with Sam, much to their delight. Great recall as well. :thumbsup:

despite the white chin, Colleen is probably little over a year old. Her teeth are in great condition, btw. Unfortunately she isn't so quiet in the yard anymore and will bark when dogs or people pass, the same as the other yard dogs in the area. I had her in the house last night and she was quiet and just played with her chew toys and slept. I do need to rehome her or put her into a rescue kennels soon.

Evie, perhaps you should post the old scratch photo I sent you, to show how Colleen's skin and coat has improved with a few weeks of care.

if you are just looking now, that last photo is of Colleen a few weeks ago. Please look at the other photos to see how well she is looking now!

I fostered Colleen out of the pound but I couldn't keep her as at the time I lived in a rented flat and already had two dogs; the yard in the photo was shared with the flat below mine. Colleen went to Rainbow Rescue and then to Dogs Trust Roden. Her first adoption failed and I heard no more after that except that she had been rehomed once again. But I have just seen some clips of her on YouTube. She is renamed Ellie and appears to be much loved and very well exercised; the video clips are of canicross and of playing with a border collie at the seashore. Looking at these photos, I do miss Colleen, but I couldn't have wished for a better life for her than she has now in Britain.

Delighted she's doing well and enjoying an active life over in England, sweet girl. :wub:
