I think that the sport caters to much for the best dogs its surely the others that need encouragement --

there can only be one top dog or bitch --

Maiden opens or events just for those who are not open class need looking at--

there are many more non winners than winners -who generate the cash that keeps clubs/sport going--

From what I can gather Andrew, it is to be run in conjunction with the Top Ten/Top Gun/Fed Top Five opens in place, or am I wrong are you intending adding another 20 seperate opens for the competition into racing?

ive started a new topic up 4 lyndon chris explaining it all under the title the golden whippet.

I don't understand the need for another competition. Chris asked for ideas for the Top Ten (the longest standing competition in whippet racing) a few months ago, could this idea not be integrated with the competiton that's already running. If people want money in a competition could 50p from each dog entering into a top ten events not all be collected and held by someone until the end of the year and then the money split amongst the top ten?

The problem with people paying to put their dogs in the competition is, you could have someone who objects to paying the £5 and their dog could in theory win the majority of these "Golden Elite Whippet Whatever Events", then whoever did officially win because they'd entered their dog by paying their £5 would know that really there was a better dog on the circuit that year.

at the present time now with the cost of everything so high, folk arent going to travel around to opens here and there knowing that there isnt going to be many dogs and winning a fiver or summit, we need summit in place where something is worth winning (if you no what i mean) everyone wants to win an open, look at the scottish derby it has the sponsorship it gets a massive turnout every year. the shirebrook st ledger coming soon that will be massive why? cos they putting the money up,

if we have 1 competition or 10 unless the money is there for everyone to have a shot at winning then we still going to get poor turnouts at normal club opens. clubs cant put big sponsorship up but if the top ten had a money incentive or the top ten integrated something along lyndons idea with clubs putting money in for there opens adding 50p of every dog at every open into a kitty at the end of the year there would be some good money about to win.

i wonder how many dogs have raced at every top ten open this year it has to be easily a thousand maybe 2, there is a big starting point to quite quickly generate a nice sum of money which can be divided out.

   maiden opens used to be run years ago, along side the top ten open.

I agree with Andy..imo the tt is out dated ..there's nothing to win at the end of ..its not always the best of the bunch that wins now..people are just not traveling to opens reason for this is either theres to many opens every weekend or on your doorstep ,cost of traveling ect...something needs to be do to attract people to travel and run ..the golden dog thing is a brilliant idea

Just an idea Opens should be cut back and opens that are run should have something new in place to increase numbers..many people are sick of racing the same dogs week in week out in classes with 2 or 3 entries , fine example is this years upto 20lb bitch and dog classes in our region i can count on one hand what would be in it on a good day ..but when you go to a derby champs ect you have 2 or 3 heats

my suggestion to a few of fed committee for next year was to drop tt points from our 6 golden jackets , as they count for top 5 anyway and the revenue that we saved from the wn advertising could of been added for top 5 winners along with there jackets they receive ..

a maiden is a good idea but personally i dont think would last, on average in the north east it averaged from 20 - 40 dogs the odd open had a bit more. dont know how it would be run but i persume when you win a maiden you would then run in the normal open again. it wouldnt take too long with the number of opens and dogs we have for there to be no more maidens, even then it i dont think it would increase the number of dogs in total on the day just decrease the dogs in the normal open.

who is going to travel with a dog that is a maiden say a 2 hour journey to run in an open??? i dont think many.

Maiden were run a few years ago, there used to be some arguments on racers 'cheating' saying they hadn't won a maiden, entering the open winning another....it didn't look good! But if everyone was honest about it, it is a great idea.

I think on looking at it all again, the 'Elite dogs' are already catered for, they take top spoils at the champs, at most opens and at all the big events especially where the money is.... and always will, the fastest dogs will always win, and in my opinion if I'm being honest, they will also take the big money and new trophy on offer too.

It is all the others who make up the numbers and who usually take nothing at opens or champs, they need catering for.

They support all events pay out hard earned cash to travel, enter and get nothing (maybe a raffle prize) it is they who need attracting to the opens to make up numbers.

Something to attract them would be fantastic, giving a boost to the opens, with a little something extra (instead of nothing) to come home with at the end of the day!

Or what about adding your ideas to 'Club Dog of the Year' they don't get the 'big' wins either....just a thought!!!!

i am not saying it is completely out dated as it would be fantastic to win it, but it just needs a few tweeks here and there. but that is just my opinion.

i understand what you are saying chris about the elite being catered for and not the losers, but lets be honest isnt that what we all want to have an elite dog. look at championships just it was fantastic to see everyone trying their hardest to win. we all strive to have and be the best, i no there has to be losers and always will but who really wants to be a loser?? it just the opposite of what we want.

for those unfortunate to have the not so good dogs, there has to be something for them i agree but finding the solution is hard, who decides if your dog is good or not?

im sure some people believe that there dog is fantastic(even if it isnt) and try to be the best, at the end of the day were all trying to make our sport better and surely that will stand us all in good stead.

Denise Re your comments;

"The Top Ten is out dated and you win nothing at the end of it....it's not always the best of the bunch that win now."

Last year our Scratch Top Ten winners were; Love Lockdown, this year Stay Out, last year main winner; Classic Rock, this year Skoshi Tiger, last years veteran winner Showman, this year once again Showman…

In my book I call these superbly consistent dogs, and well worthy winners and these are some of the best I have ever seen.

Please tell me out of this 'bunch' of Top Ten winners over the years who have not always been the ‘best’ winners....

In any dogs racing career, we aspire to win a handicap, or then maybe an open, try for a championship title and maybe even dream of taking supreme or winning the English or Scottish Derby…

Being able to add your name to a highly acclaimed list to go down in history forever is achievable for some elite dogs.

When I started racing, I looked in awe at the superb names etched on the great trophies, adding your dogs name to these greats for most was and still is just a dream.

The Top Ten competition has been in existence for over 40 years, and each year at least 53 dogs receive prizes.

It costs me well over £1000 in prizes, with the winners receiving 1 years subscription, a Velvet Presentation Jacket, Annual Trophy, a framed Certificate and Top Ten Badge.

Your suggestion to drop Top Ten pts from your 6 Golden Jackets, as they count for Top 5 anyway and the revenue that we saved from the W News advertising could be added for the Top 5 winners along with there Jackets they receive.

Denise...what do they get now for Fed Top Five (or in the past) just a jacket/trophy?

Name the winners of the Fed Top Five over the years, I’d be interested to know if you also class these as ‘NOT ALWAYS THE BEST OF THE BUNCH’???

It is just so wrong to put people’s dog down in such a way, what ever they have achieved (or not) !!!

If both organisations gave back prize money worth having at your events, this may help too, 100% payout instead of keeping money back. Yes trophies have to be paid for….as does your advertising (when you place an advert...say championships at a cost of £70...W News in return gives over at least 21 pages plus the prestigious front cover photograph space to report on the event at a massive price (which I can tell you is a lot more than the £70 initial cost to yourselves).

How rich are the BWRA and NNWRF….We all get sick of hearing complaints about payout/entry money fees/and what are they doing with the money etc….Clubs/National bodies etc advertising costs all help towards the publication of the results/photographs and I can tell you the price is ever increasing!

The Fed don’t have to have to be part of the Top Ten competition, it is not compulsory.

You don’t have to advertise in W News, and you don’t have to give me the results (you don’t now as I have to copy them and photographs from k9)…

Your idea on cutting opens back, is nothing new Denise, I have already put 2 topics on this subject recently and have even asked the Fed to cut back on what they have to no avail…

Anyway, speaking of Whippet News, I shall have the new copy (December issue) if printed in time for Sunday, at the Classic Bend Derby (which I have won twice and r-up a third) with the full Fed Champs write-up...see you all then xx

there is some amazing animals won this over the years and will continue to do so,

i know of the prizes that you give out every year chris witch is great but it would be nice to have some prizemoney with it if people like vickys idea to add 50p on every dog that enters a top ten open it would give you a nice amount of sponsorship to the whole competition and to me make it even better than it already is. if its not possible it still would be pretty amazing to win.

Chris my suggestion are only that ..and i am really shocked by your answer to me if i offended you it was not meant in that way

I am like most of us on here throwing opinions around and to see how we could increase entries at opens ..as for my comment "it's not always the best of the bunch that win now." if you read as it was wrote i explained why i thought the reasons where "people are just not traveling to opens reason for this is either theres to many opens every weekend or on your doorstep ,cost of traveling ect...something needs to be do to attract people to travel and run ..the golden dog thing is a brilliant idea "

My idea about dropping tt points from golden jacket was just that a idea ..during a nnwrf com meeting we where discussion entry's or lack of them and it was just a thought i had ffs dont take things to heart ..where did i say it was ever discussed to coming into play ..As pig say prize money attracts ..that was the reason i suggested the revenue for top 5 winners

Anyway if that's the reaction i receive for giving my own opinion ..i wont bother again good luck in improving the sport

I haven't taken it personal Denise, nor should you.....

I have known both you and Gary for over 20 years....opinions are great and refreshing AND much-needed.

I gave mine and you gave yours....no offence taken or given!

Chris just because Dee is on the NNWRF committee does'nt mean she is'nt entitled to an opinion She has as much right as anyone else withgout you keep jumping on the NNWRF as for your comments about payout, we take out £1 per dog the rest is paid out in prize money we do have expences to cover being advertising, hire of tracks, jackets, trophies, stationary, printing, storage, insurance etc

None of the committee take ANY travelling expences or phone bills we take out NOTHING at all

As for the NNWRF opens not being included in the T.T. it was in you e-mail to me about changes to the calendar your intention to exclude the Golden jacket opens from the competition, hence our committees discussion about it the outcome of which was if WN excluded these opens we would not have to advertise them the revenue saved could be used as prize money in the TOP 5

Also I do allways ask you if you are ok to copy the report/ results from k9 or would you prefer me to send them your reply has allways been Ive allready got them and I appreciate your co-operation in doing that as my computer is in my workshop and not at home I am pushed for time but in future I will write them up in the evening and post them to you As for the report on the champs bend and straight you offered before the events to do a race by race report

as for photo's we don't allways have the camera with us or occasionally have the time to do them and to be honest with you in MY opinion its your magazine, your business if you are present you should either take them yourself or arrange for someone to do it for you as any other mag or paper does

and NO the NNWRF is NOT rich and I don't like your insinuations on that comment

this internet is killing the sport, and say what you want it is!! good old pen & papers best if it got printed great if not tuff shit

people ask for views and when given they give they get shot dawn or jumped on!

i got joint 9th last year with my little bitch and im proud of her for getting 9th,its got pride of place in my room,in gold frame niceee

it takes a great animal to win that top ten,and IMO theres better dogs that havent wont it due to cost of traveling all over the country, injuries and what not

i will never run a dog again but i plan to go watch and take photos for any of the fed bwra or chris for the w/news

but i think, moneys got to be generated to go towards some sort of testing,as these dogs arent machines they our pets

this is just my opinion so there you go,i think Lyndons just wanting to put something new for people to have a go at,but its another

thing to add to an already overfull calender.i have said for years far to many opens. there opens just pop up theres just far too many..kenny

hi kenny lyndons idea is to run the golden whippet (elite) @ opens that are already in place thats how i picked it up anyway. onto this top ten thing now way back when i 1st started racing well it was peter rather than me and people went on about winning the top ten etc i used to say well wot do u win? got told the years free whippet news a trophy, certificate, badge etc. cudnt really understand wot all the fuss was about. now as the years went by and i got more and more into whippet racing i understood the top ten competiition a lot more than i did then. its not about the money or prizes or anything like that but its the prestigige (sp) of saying u won or got in the top ten of your category. so if someone said well wot does that mean? u cud answer well i had the best dog/bitch/scratch/veteran in 2011 or one of the top ten dog/bitch etc. IMO it IS the best dog/bitch/scratch/vet that will win. u still have to win events to gain points to win this competition it doesnt matter if someone travels to every single event in the country they still have to WIN to get the points to win the top ten. JMO.

hi carol i know all about it lyndon phoned and asked me to be involved, but cant get motivated now..

but here hats off to my m8 lyndon its nice to know theres someone out there willing to do a different format

as i said about the top ten, skys was 2010 i was proud as punch to get into it as she was 90 od points early on in the year then went lame

but thats whippet racing for you,,,she wears her badge on her walking jacket, and free whippet news and a nice framed photo of me and sky

theres that many good dogs n bitches out there these days,it would be a fantastic feeling to win the top ten or even get in it

but there must be cut backs on events, as you can duck and dive and still get points on solos, thats one thing this year the

dogs and bitches that was out there to beat,my god you needed top class to even win your class, the standard was that high

What is going on with all this divide and conquer behaviour?! Can you not see we're killing the sport?!

Splitting Top Ten Points?!

Holding more events / additional events further splitting whippet racing?!!

New organisations popping up??!! (Come on, I'm not numb!)

Currently we have 3 youngsters (just turned 2) They aren't crap, but they're not world beaters either. They're experienced to race, but they need the confidence to know if they try hard, they could win.

We don't have lightweight dogs which makes some events a waste of time for us to attend.

We don't or rather won't, start rehoming dogs / selling them on etc etc until we get a flying machine. We believe the dogs are our pets.

What, if anything do you think is going to persuade me to attend an event to run these dogs?, Someone who actually likes whippet racing?

Where exactly is the motivation for a newcomer to start whippet racing?!
