My 2 year old Whippet has this disease. It's dreadful.I am about to take him to the vets to have 3 more nails removed that have split down to the nerve. He has already had 4 removed.I don't know what the outlook is?

Has the vet given him a course of treatment before resorting to removing the nails?

Has the diagnosis SLO - Symmetrical Lupoid Onychodystrophy an autoimmune disease been confirmed with a biopsy?

The only 100% accurate way to diagnose this disease is by biopsy.

Has a fungal infection been completely ruled out?

If this has been diagnosed I am pretty sure its now treated with the addition of fatty acids to the diet. The one whippet I know that had it has recovered completely. The outlook can vary considerably...some breeds are very prone to this problem

Here is a good link http://www.grassmere-animal-hospital.com/SLO.htm

Hope all goes well for him
