Think i will be throwing a spanner in the works here but my old girl a kc whippet who is a fit healthy 14 year old had pups at the age of 12, wasnt planned as hadnt even seen her to be in season, she had been putting on a bit of weight but like myself i put it down to old age, she had even been checked out by the vet 3 weeks previous and he didnt think anything of it, well anyway she had 2 healthy pups who i found homes for, the age of the dog who covered her, 11, also a kc whippet. would that be a world record.

Both these dogs are in fine fettle and don't look anything like their age. They have had a healthy outside life with lots of exercise.

spot on i will also vote for that,and i also think that the pups should be at least one year old before breeding again.and i think puppy racing should be scrapped cos some are getting set of to early and breaking legs etc,and if the owners dont think they are going to be open class they find PET homes for them.surely they are pets first ?i have seen quite a few passed on at 12 months old just because they arnt fast enough.im glad we didnt with roger{not that we would have cos hes gorgeous}as he was turned 3 before he showed any form.

I'm glad to see that most of you wouldn't plan more than 3 litters from a bitch. Another consideration is finding decent longterm homes for the pups. Unfortunately the suggestion "Personally, I believe the best quality of breeding comes from a sound brood who's had a long racing career that's bred from once this has been well established i.e. around 5-6yrs old." conflicts with the advice that a bitch should have her first litter around the age of 2 as the pelvic bones harden with age and their may be difficulty with a bitch having her first litter later. Of course, I've heard of successful first time litters with bitches over the age of 3, but I've also heard of caesareans being necessary.

I wouldn't like a bitch to have a litter (say, her second litter) after around the age of 7. In the case of pedigree dogs, the kennel club won't register litters from bitches under 1 year old or over the age of 8. They recently reduced the maximum no. of litters per bitch from 6 to 4.

I'm glad to hear that the 12 year old whippet's pregnancy and nursing went okay. I met someone with a German shepherd type bitch who had never been bred from and then got accidentally mated at the age of 11. When I was speaking with the owner, the bitch was due in two weeks. We met on the train when I was travelling with dogs, so I never heard how things went for the bitch later.

I agree with all you've said, but, I would point out, that, the only reason the K.C. have reduced the number is because it is the Law Of The Land, as set out in the 2000 act! I am steadfastly against wanton breeding of pups and the "puppy farming" that we are seing from some people in our sport. I feel that "Our" ruling body could do more to help stamp out "bad practise" in our chosen Sport! As yet, I am not optimistic, as, so far, they've done nothing to help improve the welfare of "our" breed! :unsure: :wub:
