It was wonderful to watch this parade yesterday with some of the rarer hound breeds, 2 that I'd never even seen before.

Basset Bleu de Gascogne (I'd only met the bigger ones before)

there were also two lovely Cirneca Dell’Etnas there but I'm afraid I didn't get any photos as there was a peel of thunder as they entered the ring and my 2 collies needed to go and hide :(

Some stunning dogs in those photos, must have been an impressive sight watching them

I'm vey taken with the Azawakhs, Sloughis (loving the brindle one) and those very elegant Silken Windhounds

Really sad I couldn't get there. My friend Sue had her lovely Bloodhounds in the parade, beautiful Sloughis and Azawaks. Why they had Silken Windhounds I don't know, they are not recognised by the KC. Odd.

A really nice show to attend if you are a hound person.

Im glad they invited the Silkens....beautiful hounds and a delight to see them along with my other faves the Azawakhs Personally I dont care whether the KC recognises them or not, just delighted to be able to see a few around the show

I love the look of the silken windhounds too  From what I have read the breeders are striving for longevity and health as well as stunning looks and personality :))

You're correct :) health and longevity are extremely important to silken breeders, most silkens live well into their late teens, we are fortunate that silkens have not inherited the DM gene from borzois and also the line of borzois initially used in their makeup were not known for the many cancers that take most of our borzois today.

Silken breeders are the extremely dedicated to health matters, when a test for the DM gene was discovered over 150 silkens were tested (with considerable expense) within a matter of weeks, thankfully they were all clear.

Silkens are not quite the perfect breed yet though, we do have some 'defect' genes which don't affect the health or well being of any silkens but are still being tested for and bred out. These are the MDR1 gene (ivermectin sensitivity). If a dog were MDR1 positive the owners would have to be careful to avoid certain ivermectin based drugs. Because of this every breeding silken is dna tested for MDR1 and 2 carriers are not bred together. Silkens can also carry the CEA gene, no silken has ever shown clinical signs of CEA but still it is tested for, and again no two carriers are bred together. In time these genes will be bred out of the breed.

Silkens are the only breed with a fully dna verified parentage, before a silken can be bred from a dna sample is sent away to verify that it's pedigree is correct. Of course pedigrees are usually taken on trust, in silkens you KNOW who the parents are.

was this the show at Peterborough?

We seriously looked at Hamiltons a while back, as an alternative to beagles, and when we became interested in hunting, I trawled 'discover dogs' at Crufts meeting the hunting breeds, and was VERY taken with the Bavarian Mountain dogs :D

No at the Hound Show in Stafford in July :) I love the BMHs too, such a wonderful rich colour

Oh wow - I want an Otterhound!
Now don't commit to that before you get close to one, they stink to high heaven :teehee:

Some dogs just smell more than others. Bassets smell quite a lot (from memory) and I can tell you from experience that GSDs spend quite a large proportion of their time smelling of wet dog, since it takes several hours for a long haired dog to dry once they get wet (which they do at every available opportunity!). Many of the 'greasy coated' dogs like Newfoundlands ramp up the smell enormously due to the grease that they leave all over everything around the house too. I love Newfies but the combination of grease, drool and mud from long coats is just too much for me (and my house is too small).

If I was going to have a mountain dog it would have to be a Bernese, but again, my house is too small to consider having one.

Ah this isn't normal wet dog smell Eingana, Otter hounds have a real musky odour, something to do with the oil in their coats. I've been to several newfie shows and judged a few in variety classes and never noticed the smell off them .. but otterhounds you can smell from 12 feet away :D

KC ones more than working ones for some reason
So this show was a KC one then?

Really? I've already got 3 tom cats and a house that perpetually smells of wet dog. I think I'll pass thanks :x
