Hi,

We have 2 dogs, both staffys, one male and female, my partner is 3 months pregnant so decided to play baby noises on my phone to see what the reaction was, and I have no idea what my female was doing so hoped you could help.

When I play the noises she will stop whatever she is doing, run over to wherever my phone is, lie on her side and pull my phone into her belly, if the other dog goes near her she strips her teeth and growls at him, but she is fine if me or my partner go near her, she will also growl at anyone that's on the tv.

Can anyone explain this behaviour and is it a good or a bad thing, there's zero aggression at all when she hears the noises and she is very gentle with my phone in getting it to her stomach, the only aggression is to the other dog and anyone on tv

Staffies are baby protectors right?

I'd tell her off for being aggressive to your other staff though

She gets told off for being aggressive, this is a different type of growl I've never heard it before and he backs off straight away, where as he will usually growl back, I just wanted to see if her behaviour is normal, she's still young she's only 10 months, our other staffy is 2 and is twice her size so whatever she is doing he's backing off her right away

It will be up to you to keep a close eye on your dogs when the baby arrives, you need to know your dogs, at the end of the day never trust ANY DOG regardless how much we kove them.. Some people say they trust their dogs 100percent and that id just daft..

My dogs will never be left alone with the baby it's just not going to happen, I want to introduce sounds to them now so that it's not strange when the little one comes home.

Train her to be calm with that sound, that the sound is good and she need not react differently to it from other sounds. That is the long term solution you want. Telling a dog of is a short term solution only and may impact negatively in the long term.

Female animals of most if not all species have a specific "get the hell away from me NOW" noise they can make if their babies are threatened in any way, My guess is your bitch is protecting her 'baby' (your phone) from everyone except you and your partner, She is at the age where hormones are rife, is she coming out or going in to season?

I would stop her actually getting hold of your phone to try and stop this rather than telling her off, but keep playing the noises as that is a good idea to get them used to a new baby screaming.

Maybe play with her when you are playing the noises so that she is more interested in you and the toys, then the actual noises would be more background noises and not so important to her. Good Luck

She finished her first season about 8 weeks ago, and she's gone back to how she was, we have started to play the sounds but when they're on we are playing with her so she can still hear the noises, but doesn't see them in a negative way

Here's the little maternal puppy bless

I personally would get the manners well into both dogs and get them used to staying in cages NOW....so that when the baby arrives you can introduce the baby when the dogs are used to staying relaxed in the cages. I would never be worth taking the risk of trusting a dog in such a stressful situation.
