Hi,

My name is harvi and I have a beautiful dog, Daisy, a cross breed boxer cross with lab. Daisy was a stray from Ireland and she found her way to dogs trust. We adopted her in May 2013. She is aged about three now. Since we got her she has had a skin problem whereby she is constantly scratching, biting herself. We have tried steroids and this hS worked but is not a long term solution. So the vet tried piritone tablets in addition as well as essential fatty acid. Unfortunately with the decrease in steroids, Daisy's itching is back. Following blood tests, daisy has been diagnosed with an allergy to house dust mites. We are quite clean at home but not a sterile environment! Oh we did change her dier to James Wellbeloved lamb and rice. Today we started on atopica tablets 100mg. Having googled this medication I am somewhat alarmed at the list of side effects. Feeling very worried about my precious dog having lost my last two dogs recently.

Does anyone have any experience of this medication on their dogs? Would really be grateful for input on this.

Hello

I think I may have placed this in the wrong heading. Disappointed that there has been no responses. Anyway I stopped the medication after 5 days as I could not stop worrying. Now will be trying allergy injections which sounds like a homeopathic idea as th allergen is injected to try and desensitise the reaction.

In the meantime daisy has continued with daily piritone and alternate days steroids and put on enormous weight! I am trying her on a raw diet in the hope it will help. Glad that I have pet insurance.

Would value some input from others who have similar problems.

hiya, i don't have any experience of atopica, but am very interested in itchy dogs, and what may resolve it....

If you put "atopica" into the search bar at the top of this site, it will bring up all previous threads that contain that word, might be of some use to you, you could maybe direct message someone that has some experence of it. There are also a number of threads on itchiness !

good luck x

My whippet was on Atopica (Cyclosporine) for many months when she had SRMA. She did very well on it indeed, and suffered no side effects whatsoever.

Hope this helps to put your mind at rest.

I'm afraid you have to be quite strict about food intake when a dog is on steroids - there is no filling them.
