my daughter's lurcher occasionally seems to be dizzy and can't get down stairs or off the couch. has anyone ever seen this before?

I would ask how old as well. There is a syndrome with older dogs called vestibular syndrome or vestibular disease which can cause them to be unbalanced. Treatment is quite simple with an anti-emetic (motion sickness) tablet, but should be diagnosed by a vet before treatment as there are certainly other things that could cause this.
