Choosing a pup and settling it in...

We have a 10 year old daughter desperate for a pup. We got a pup last year but we weren't prepared for him and rushed the process and ended up taking him back after 5 days! This broke our daughters heart but it was the right thing yo do at the time. We are thinking of trying again but taking it slowly, we have a 4 year old who was scared of our last pup toy/standard poodle cross. He was too old and wild for her. We are looking at cavachon type pups and want her to be involved in picking and training the pup so she's not scared this time. We also tried to keep the pup in only a couple of rooms which drove him mad plus he couldn't be walked as the breeder hadn't sorted his jabs which didn't help!

Basically I'd like advice on picking a small, friendly non moulting breed that will be ok alone for a few hours some days and will be good with the kids. Also advice on settling a pup in would be very welcome.

Your right to be sure but i make one point its got to be the parents call to get a dog not the children going on and on pleading for one...Set the rules if u do decide again and never leave the dog alone with children ok the dog can bite but i get peeved when kids think a dog is a toy.. A Cavachon is a good choice given the things you have said about your circumstances, small friendly breed which could fit in nicely. It is important to include all members of the Family when going to look at the new pup, make sure they are all happy to have a new pet. Introducing a young pup into new surroundings is difficult enough and it needs to be able to rely on everyones support. Having a puppy is hard work to start with but the fun value far outweighs the initial problems.

Why do you want a mongrel? If you truly need a non shedding breed you need to go for a poodle or a non shedding terrier, a cross bred cavalier will probably shed plenty
