My dog won't go to the toilet on concrete?

We slabbed part of our garden and sectioned it off for our dog and since he was a puppy he has always gone to the toilet on it with no issues.

We don't let him on the grass because he wrips it up and ruins it.

Over the last couple of weeks he will not go on the concrete! The only time he does now is if he is absolutely desperate!

Even in the morning when he has been in the house asleep for 7 hours plus he will not go to the toilet.

He waits until he is out on his walk and then makes a mad dash for the grass because he is desperate to go to the toilet!

We have gone back to basics with him by going outside with him and then saying weewee's and rewarding him when he goes but its not working!

The other night I was outside for over 40 minutes and as it was so late and it was bedtime I gave up and just put him to bed!

Has anyone got any ideas why he has started doing this and any suggestions on how to combat this odd behaviour?

All comments welcome! :)

Perhaps whatever you're using to wash the concrete is affecting him and he doesn't like the smell of it? How long are his nails? Is it uncomfortable for him to be on the concrete?

Is there a small area you could turf just for him? Or maybe put down stone rather than concrete?

I actually prefer my dogs to go on the grass rather than concrete. I have also trained them to go on loose stone and shale. Occasionally they will go on the concrete paving at the side of our house, but if they are out they would never go on it.

Another thought - have you corrected him when out for going on concrete and encouraged him to the grass when walking? If so then perhaps he's made that connection to the concrete at home too?
