So our beagle, snoopy, is 4 years old, he is overweight by 5 kg (i know) just started him on diet food, just checking if the following things are wrong with his day to day life, activities, food, personality, behaviour.

First of all the house is open fully to him, but not always.

We first let him give us cuddles on the sofa when we realise how squidgy, chubby, soft and cuddly he was, we were going to not let him up at first at all, but we gave in. Shortly after it just kind of happened, he was just jumping up on the sofa uninvited. I am 14 i would like to add and also sorry if grammar is out of place as i suffered a severe collies fracture in my wrist (snapped in half) 4 weeks ago. But anyway we never had a stair gate to stop him going up the stairs as he was only a fat ball of lard as a puppy (8 weeks, when we got him) and we bought him fat, so he couldn't actually get up the stairs, he was in a cage with his bed/basket, fluffy cushiony blanket and a failed surrogate mum teddy. The cage was in the kitchen sort of like the one in 102 Dalmatians with the work top covering the roof of the cage. The cage was always open, but we closed the kitchen door. But one day my dad must of sleep walked down to the kitchen and eaten ice cream and various foods that belongs to me L.O.L, so i believe he left the kitchen door open, i kept my door open when i was 10 because i had slight night terrors. I woke up the next morning with what felt like a slightly boney hot water bottle laying under the quilt on my chest, i was wrong it was the adorable sight of a beagle puppies flabby face, not joking best moment ever. So i sort of sneaked him upstairs a few more time now he's a permanent resident in everyones bed. To this day he has had limitless access to everywhere in the house

He is a lovely but unaffectionate dog, only ever snapped once but stopped 0.000000000001 to late and caused little physical pain but emotional horrible, he snapped as he had undiagnosed colitis and i have A.D.H.D so when my medication ran out i was bouncy, hyper and not realising he was feeling in pain. Never done anything viscous, he does still a lot of food, my fault as i am forgetful but i have got better about leaving plates with food on unattended as he is the ginger ninja.

He is walked 3 times a day and each last 20-30 minutes. He can run slightly faster than me, i did used to be in school relay and was about 7th out of our 60 student year group, so not too bad. He does pant as we start to end our walk on a hot day, he has a recreational ground and huge woods for his main walks, we dont go out in the car walks as he hates and is sick 10/10 times in the car, we even used pheromone spray and (legal, vets subscribed) dopey pills but none worked. He can run for about 1 minute after that he's panting and then goes back to playing.

Behaviour wise he is good on walks but runs off still a little bit, he used to always so we are thankful anyway, we just stands where we are and he comes back as he is a wuss. He will never miss an opportunity to steal food. Is this normal? He is very lazy and is either sleeping, sunbathing, cuddling, stealing or on a walk. He is ridiculous in these ways has a very squeaky puberty like bark howl, me and my dad go catzzzzzzzerzzzzz or ßzzsst and he shoot out into the garden and howls. Also snores 2nd loudest in the house, just under my dad. He lies on his back and looks like a frog.

He doesnt have a master. We all are in our own way. He is loved and told he is beautiful, handsome, little boy, gawjuss boy and about 100 others, every time he comes to see us after a snooze. We have a 9 metre squared garden on 2 levels with astro turf, theres a outdoor sofa which he sun bathes in. I play with him once a day at about 19:30/20:00 with tug of war, fetch and possession of the blanket. If he steals food/runsoffonwalk/chewssomeonespossessionsup.is punished by going to his bed which he does with tale between legs, for about 30 mins then he comes into the room the family is in without being told he can come out and said sorry by climbing on you and putting his paws on your shoulders. He doesnt poo in the garden he rarely does wees there too. we live in an area where the cars are parked 250m from the houses and we let him run around the neighbourhood in the morning at 6 o'clock s theres no cars and he comes back when u quietly shout his name, i am the prime carer and i am his owner. But my mum is his mummy and dad daddy and so on, he believes he is human and acts like one. He has constant kisses, cuddles, petting (not the dirty way for all those sickos), he isnt really a strokey dog.

We have tried about 5 short and long term weight loss diets, activities and other things, could that just be how he is as a dog, like thats how he is. I can see his ribs, can carry him with one arm, and vet said he has beautifully perfect and strong legs.

So how have i done, how can i improve, and really good weird ways to stop him putting weight on. Thanks.

What a lovely Beagle

I have had beagles for 12 years now and you are describing a "normal" beagle, they steal, run away, cuddle, sleep in your bed, sunbathe, sleep, play with toys, bark and howl pretty much all day every day LOL

What weight is your dog? from the photos he does not look 5kgs overweight but its hard to tell when he is lying down.

How much do you feed him (how many grams of food per day?)

What type of food do you feed him?

Do you give him treats and let him eat your leftovers?

I would start by cutting his food down and not giving treats and increasing his exercise every day, even if you could up it to 40-45 mins walking 3 times each day that will help him shift weight. The only thing I would worry about is when you say he is allowed to run around your neighbourhood in the mornings, I would be worried that he may run infront of a car.

I hope your wrist feels better soon. :flowers:

Hi,

I have a 5 year old Westie and we moved countries so we changed his diet and routine. He became 2 kilos overweight so, we are giving light food and instead of giving him dog treats we are giving him pieces of apple and carrots. He already lost 1 kilo. I also take him for walks twice a day for 30 min.
