Hello I'm new to this forum and I'm hoping you can help me. It's a bit of an odd one and I'm hoping someone can shed some light on the subject.

I have a collie cross rescue dog who seems to enjoy biting things that hurt - brambles, roses, wasps, bees and now electric cables eg phone lines. He yelps when he gets hurt and then goes back for more. Other than this he is an incredibly gentle dog, has anyone come across this before or have any ideas of what to do?

Oh dear!!!!

I think you should be able to train him to leave it. the action should be followed by a correction within 3 seconds of him doing the unwanted behaviour. This way he will learn that what he is doing is wrong and not to do it again. The correction can be anything from tugging his lead, to a sharp NO! but please do not smack your dog on the nose, at best give him a nudge but dont hit him. Especially with him being a rescue rehabilitation is key.

If you're out on walks then there isnt much you could do if the bee or wasp is buzzing round him and he goes for it, but with the initial kamikaze trait it can be trained out of him. Mine like to throw himself off the top of stairs when he was a pup and try and eat things that could of killed him! Thankfully he grew out of it but it took consistent training to make him realize that his actions werent the right ones.

if you begin to struggle maybe get personal trainer in to help on a one to one basis if you become really concerned about these issues.

Good luck!
