Hello, I'm a relatively new dog owner and I've just treated my lurcher with Flea Away spot on solution. He went a bit bonkers, didn't like it and seems very unhappy, trying to rub it off and taking himself away to lay by himself. Is this normal? Just a bit worried he might be having some sort of reaction to it. Thanks

Hi,

It could just be the smell. Obviously, these solutions have a really strong small for us so it must be overbearing for a dog. However, it could be a reaction so i would just keep an eye on it. If your dog's skin becomes red or inflamed, clean it with warm soapy water and seek veterinary advice. Also, look out for your dog scratching the spot this could also indicate a reaction/discomfort.

Do be aware that many of these, off the shelf, preparations are not very effective. Fleas can be the devils own things to eradicate and a veterinary strength one is usually the only way to go. Vets keep up to date on which ones the fleas are becoming resistant to and change product regularly. There are some very good tablet ones out there now but only available from your vet.

The only effective ones I have found are Frontline and Advocate. Frontline is available from many sources and online. Advocate will treat fleas and worms but is only available on prescription from your vet. In my opinion these are the only ones to go with.

Update on Frontline. Many pets have become resistant to the Frontline that has come off licence and is sold in chemists etc, Frontline Combo has replaced it and is only available from your vet.
