Playing detective with my dog re seizures

So...after Mr Cash had, what I believe to be, his first seizure last year, followed by another last night and has been diagnosed as idiopathic seizures, naturally I have been doing a bit of research. As is probably obvious it is recommended that dogs diagnosed with the above should not be used for breeding -

When I rehomed Mr Cash at one year old from who I believe is the breeder who claimed he sold the pup then took him back when he was advised he wasn't being looked after I was sure there must be some reason why he was so willing to sell him on so cheap and easily especially considering his pedigree etc. However general health tests came back fine (though idiopathic seizures wouldn't show on any tests)

Anyway I love the dog to bits and it makes no difference to me I always, always, rehome/rescue dogs and whatever "issues" they come with I will deal with and do the best I can. However it all seems to be clicking in to place now......was my boy returned to the breeder because he had seizures and therefore couldn't be used for further breeding?? And is that why he was passed on to me so easily?? It makes sense to me but maybe I am looking in to it too much?? Would it be wrong of me to contact the breeder (Should I be able to find a means to) to inform him of his condition (considering it is advised that none of his siblings be used for breeding either and I know they are) and at the very least to ask if there is any kind of history of it in his bloodline because apparently it can be hereditary?

As I say it makes no difference whatsoever to me. My pets are just that...pets to be loved and cared for I have no interest in making money of them and I will look after Cash in whichever way he needs. I just wonder how much has actually been known and has he been "cat off" because of this.....that makes me sad and angry! xx

For myself yes I would tell the breeder, if they didn't know and are responsible then they would want to know to take action. If they already knew then it wont make any difference. Good for you in continuing with your boy.

I'd say yes. If you pass on the info then it might stop someone breeding and passing on the problem without realising.

I would by all means let the breeder know. There are unscrupulous breeders in all breeds. However this breeder may be genuinely unaware of the situation. The previous owner may have lied about not being able to keep him etc. There are so many ways to look at the situation and once a dog has been through a couple of owners stories can become very confused and inaccurate. I must however say that some of the breeders i know would happily rehome a dog they'd bred who had been returned for FREE to the right home. The top concern of any decent breeder should always be the quality of the home on offer and the happiness of the dogs they breed.

I know the name of the breeder and can find him on "whippet archives" but there are no contact details...the closest I can get for a contact is the owner of his half brother

My little boy...its funny I have rehomed/rescued many many dogs and love them all equally but I have such a special bond with this boy! I don't know if its the circumstances in which I got him or just the fact we have been through so much together (I was in a terrible marriage and when my husband was out all hours it was just me and Mr Cash) he came everywhere with me, he has licked many tears of my face and given me some of the most comforting cuddles He is literally my best friend and reminds me every day why I prefer my dogs to most people lol!!

He's gorgeous. He was there for you when it was tough, now you are there for him. Hope he doesn't have any more seizures.
