Dog still has diarrhoea after being ill

Hello all. Nearly 4 weeks ago my dog ate something in the park which caused him to be extremely ill. He spent 5 nights in the vets and we nearly lost him. He is now home but still has diarrhoea. He has always had a sensitive tummy and previously was on chappie dry food which seemed to suit him and kept his stools firm, however, he can't tolerate the dry lumps now. At the moment he is on Hills ID Gastrointestinal canned which the vet recommended but the diarrhoea isn't improving. I'd really appreciate any suggestions as to an alternative. Thanks

hi ask Vet for some Kaolin and Morphine, used to get it from the chemist but they no longer sell it because of the morphine. the Vet will have one without morphine but it does not work so well. If you live in Scotland you can still get this from the chemists. always works on my boys and one did have pancreatic problems one time.

Hello. I would recommend going on to cooked chicken and rice for a while. I always use diarstop ( was diarsanyl) for diarrhoea. You might want to add a probiotic- I've used "synbiotic" which I get from hyperdrug.

I feed Royal Canin gastrointestinal low fat (dry) with great success to a dog with a chronic gut problem. I expect your dog may have persistent damage to his gut which will take some time for you to master. Good luck

I would also add some probiotics ..full fat natural youghut or milk kiefer works wonders . Give his belly a rest for a few days with bland food then slowly start to add his normal food. It may be that you have to change his food to one suited to a sensitive tummy . The website All about dog food has lots of independent reviews to help I make a choice. I don't know what the weather is like with you but it's been scorching here for a few weeks now , so watch he stays hydrated ..very important in the heat if he still has the runs. And if you are still concerned go back to the vet's and get him checked.

Forti Flora, made by Purina is a good pro biotic. My vet stocks it but it is not on prescription so you can buy it anywhere. Do persevere with whichever probiotic you choose to use. I am a big fan of natural yoghurt for dogs. I give mine a dessertspoonful every morning.
