I wonder if anybody has had any experience of staying in a hotel with their dog, for a night or two.

A number of places say you can bring your dog but I wonder what it is like. Can they sleep in the same room, and come into the dining room etc.

I want to do this but am a bit worried that the hotel people might not be so welcoming to a dog, despite what they say.

Would welcome hearing people's experiences in this matter.

I have. The dog was allowed in the bedroom and some parts of the hotel - the bar but not the dining room for example. Food could be served in the bar though. Some hotels are very pet friendly, and even supply biscuits etc. If you know where you are going someone might be able to suggest some hotels?

Yes, I have done it several times. Most hotels are run by staff and they don't really care as long as your dog does not bark all night or cause other guests a nuisance.

If it is the sort of hotel that does not serve food in the bar, where dogs are allowed, then you will have to consider if your dog would be happy left alone in a strange room. We have used the car, on occasions, to get around this issue.

As has been said it all depends on the Hotel, some are brilliant, some less so. And for me once I find a good really dog friendly place I go there again and again,

On the subject of recommendations - I would like to recommend The Hoste Arms in Burnham Market, Norfolk.

Any in your neck of the woods BikerJohn?

Two I use a fair bit are near my sons, they are 'The Black Bull at Belsham' and 'The Red Lion at Hinxton'. Both close enough to Cambridge. Very nice pubs, comfortable rooms, good food and dogs allowed in bar area, (water bowls etc), you can eat in the bar. And the staff are always fussing my two.

Near me I don't know any places to stay with dogs, but two places I go to for meals and can recommend are 'The Sun Inn' at Crook near Kendal, Very dog friendly they are made welcome, offered a soft blanket, (which my Whippet appreciates), and have been known to get treats. And the food is good. The other one is 'The Watermill at Ings' north of Kendal. Again very dog friendly, their are two bars both with dinning, one dogs are allowed one they are not, plus plenty of out door tables for summer eating. As well as a pub it's a micro brewer with quite a few dog named beers, (I can recommend Shih Tzu Faced).

Thank you to everyone for these helpful replies.

I actually want to find somewhere in Somerset where I can stay with my retriever.

Any further suggestions would be welcome

I think there may be a website that lists dog friendly places to stay. Try "Pet Friendly" or similar on Google.
