Boarder Terrier
The Boarder Terrier was bred as a fox and vermin hunter. There legs were long enough to keep up with the horses and foxhounds that travelled with them but their bodies were small enough to crawl in the burrows of foxes. The breed was recognised by the Kennel Club in 1920.
Life span: 12-14 years
Height: males 33-40cm and females 28-36cm
Weight: males 5.9-7.1kg and females 5.1-6.4kg
Boarder terriers are active, bouncy and love people. They can be great escape artists with their excitement to dig and chew. Make sure you allow them to act out these natural behaviours but in the correct way. They have a habit of getting overweight so be sure to measure their food and give them at least 30 minutes of vigorous exercise each day!
Health Checks
If you intend to buy a puppy you must find a good breeder who can show you health clearances from BOTH of the puppies parents.
The health checks are:
Hip Dysplacia - This is an abnormality of the hip joint. Breed mean score 13 (parents should be lower)
Eye disease - Hereditary cataract; Multiocular defects (MOD) (litter screening); Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) (gradual loss of sight) (annual testing)

Heart Defects - Various kinds can affect Boarder Terriers. The most common condition is pulmonic stenosis, a narrowing of the valve that separates the right chamber of the heart with the lungs
Malocclusions - This is where the jaw doesn’t fit together correctly
