St.Bernard
The St.Bernard originated from Switzerland and it’s history began when Archdeacon Bernard de Menthon founded a hospice that would aid travellers who were overcome by crossing the dangerous path through the mountains. The St.Bernards were first likely used to help guard the monks and the grounds. But they soon discovered that they were excellent path finders and had the ability to locate helpless travellers! The breed can with stand harsh winters which make them perfect for search and rescue missions.
Life Span: 8-10 years
Height: males 70-90cm and females 65-80cm
Weight: 64-120kg (wow!)
The St.Bernard is a gentle giant that enjoys family life. However they do take longer to mature mentally so be prepared for a very big puppy! This may cause problems if you have young children as they could get unintentionally knocked over! You must be prepared for lots of drool and some heavy shedding!
Health Checks
If you intend to buy a puppy you must find a good breeder who can show you health clearances from BOTH of the puppies parents.

The Saint Bernard is one of the high profile breeds designated by the Kennel Club as requiring particular monitoring by reason of visible conditions which may cause health and welfare concerns!!
Hip Dysplacia - This is an abnormality of the hip joint. Breed mean score 22.8 (parents should be lower)
Elbow Dysplacia - Should ideally be 0:0
To Keep in mind…
Entropion - A defect which causes the eyelid to roll in. This is usually obvious by six months of age.
Epilepsy - This causes mild or severe seizures
