Trouble with digestive system.

A few weeks, but the rescue centre said he'd had everything done. but now I'm not so sure. He had been neutered, there was evidence of that. He's a little bit livelier now though I had to carry him out to the garden earlier. I'll see if he's up for a short walk.

Scrap the last sentence, he's gone back to sleep, not like him at all. He was very quiet last night, we thought it was his digestive problem.

He's lying next to me snoozing and dozing so I've put some gentle Christmas Carols on to stop him from hearing general noise in the background which may agitate him. His little head looks up for me as I go out of the room to do my jobs. Bless. He's always been a bit odd, like just sitting with his head down and staring at the floor. I do wonder if there is something wrong with him.

Long may it continue, but he had stools that looked the way they should have this morning. Still mixing the new stuff with rice and boiled egg for a couple more days, but it seems to be doing the job.

Yay, firmer poo this morning and no mess in the house, I'm going for the full feed minus the rice and egg today. I have a lot of newspaper ready to put down tonight.

Arghh, put him on JWB on about the 14th December and he has been much better, Still a bit soft at times and recently seems to be defecating more than when we started it. He had a spell of defecating before we got up, I moved his meal to two hours later and he was OK for a while. Yesterday morning, back to the morning poo, last night I made absolutely sure that he went at 10, but no,there was poo again this morning! Both times solid. Am I feeding him too much? I'm going by the recommendations on the bag. He's back to two walks a day and play off lead in the garden when he runs a lot. What do I do next? This dog is challenging in every way possible. We have had him for 3 months, he didn't do any mess in the house for the first 3 weeks.

Sorry to hear this. In my experience many dog food guidelines are a bit generous - I like to keep an eye on body condition. Overfeeding can cause sloppy poo.is he the sort of dog who will finish his bowl, or will he stop eating when he is full? If the former, perhaps cut back a little as long as he isn't losing condition.

Another thing I thought of since your last post was this. I don't know how you feel about supplements but it might help.

Thanks for your reply. I'll look at the supplements, have you used them yourself? The vet suggested that maybe he'll need one of those posh foods that they sell if his digestive system didn't settle down. He does leave his first meal sometimes, but not his second. I gave him less yesterday, but he likes his treat ball at night,maybe that's the problem, perhaps we should just give a few treats with his food allowance.

I haven't used them, my dog hasn't needed them but I do know others have had success, and Dorwest was a company I researched as part of a qualification I did a couple of years ago so I am confident to recommend them. Instead of treats in his treat ball, could you use the ball for one of his meals? But definitely take account of his treats in his food allowance.

He was very quiet for a couple of nights Sunday and Monday, he usually nags the OH for his treat ball, but he was just lethargic. I'm going tor try reducing his food and treats, but keep an eye on his weight etc. Our last dog was nothing like this one. She was gentle, could cope with any food didn't bark and pull on walks, could go off lead and could be taken anywhere. We were so smug when other dogs misbehaved, now we are the people with that dog.This dog is the total antithesis of our other dog and is proving to be very challenging. A few people think we should take him back to the rescue centre because he is so challenging, indeed I have spoken to the rescue centre and they said they would take him back, but what would become of the little chap then? We are responsible for him now. I have wondered if he wold be better on a farm or somewhere where he could be a working dog.

I was supposed to take him to classes last weekend, but as OH and myself both had 'flu we couldn't I will try again this weekend. I desperately need help with this dog.
 
Does the vet know about the lethargy? That to me (along with the seizure) is a bit of a concern. A young dog should be capable of bouncing about a lot of the time.

He did come out of it and was bounding about like a 2 year old last night and today.
 
Maybe he just wasn't hungry. He loves his walk, his off- lead exercise in the garden and his training, but after dinner he loves it when we all sit down in the lounge and he curls up in his bed or is stretched out like a lettuce leaf.
