thoughts on dyeing dogs hair....

What are everyones thoughts on this? Do you like the photo's below? or do you think it's a cruel thing to do?

You might want to change the subject line to 'Dyeing dogs' hair'... 'Dying dogs hair' would be something else altogether:eek:
I don't like it at all. Sure, the odd dog will probably be happy to stand there for ages while it's all done and sure, the odd owner/groomer may have taken the time to ensure it's a positive experience throughout, but how many more owners are going to be so set on the final result that they will put their dog through it regardless of how the dog feels about it? And how many are going to have to use severely aversive 'training' to make their dog compliant?

When things get competitive, the prize can be very seductive. I had high hopes of showing (lurcher showing, very different to pedigree showing) and racing Jasper, and he had the form and the speed that meant he could have done really well. But he didn't have the right brain... So we 'retired' him after just a few attempts. The desire for one of those rosettes was strong, and I was very disappointed, but that was all about what I wanted, not what was right for him.
 
It just looks wrong and I do wonder about the mentality of people who might do this.
 
@JudyN Something josie needs to work on: spelling! (Although I did even spell check..hmmm)
 
@Josie Ah, the curse of the spellchecker strikes again! I'm a copy-editor and tend to ignore spellings when not in work mode, but this one just looked a bit macabre!
 
Not a big fan. I saw a dog recently being walked through Bath. She had a pink diamante collar and lead and had been dyed a pale pastel pink all over. She looked like a blob of candyfloss poor thing. The owner BTW matched her dog very well...

What I guess made me sad was not the grooming itself but rather that she would never probably have the chance to romp in a field and learn the joys of splashing through muddy puddles and rolling in something disgusting.

I dislike it just because a dog doesn't have a say if it looks stupid or people stair
 
Before I start, I would never do this to any of my dogs because I really couldnt be bothered ... but I do have a poodle, and groom him myself. He loves being bathed and groomed (cept his feet) and would probably enjoy hours on end of being the centre of attention if I did ever decide to make him look a bit daft by dying his hair. The other 2 dogs would get bored after about 2 minutes and run off.
 
Totally fine with it! I dye my own dog's fur, and have the past almost 4 years, after working for a creative groomer and getting into the creative grooming area. It's literally no different than applying conditioner to their coat; you apply it, leave it in, and rinse it out. So, it's just another step in the grooming process! Dogs do not know how they look and do not care. :) Frankly, I don't like one of the "below" images, as I know the owner of one of those Poodles, and I don't consider her an unethical handler and owner. :oops:

The majority get plenty of time to be a dog! The same argument could be used with people who show their dogs. Because you'd think they wouldn't want their dogs getting stained, hair messed up, etc. and dye isn't even a part of showing dogs (except some to make white more white)! Typically for competitions, the process of getting a dog clean and kept, doesn't happen until a few days before competition. Before that, dogs are dogs.





I don't mind people's opinions being against it, but sometimes the reasoning is a bit silly to me! :)
 
It's good to get both for and against arguments. That's what makes it a good debate! Thank you for putting your points across :)
 
For sure, I wasn't really planning on posting my dogs because I know outside of the USA and Canada, even, doing this isn't really liked at all, and I know this is a UK based forum, haha! But, not I did, so I'll have to share more pictures here and there since now it's known I dye my dog(s). :p
 
Would you say that dying dogs hair is more relaxed in the USA @thedogsbeforetime?

I haven't actually seen a dog with dyed hair myself but then I don't tend to visit big dog shows where I guess it's more likely to happen!

Could you tell me more about the creative grooming? very interesting topic!
