Timber has a sheepskin rug to lie on. Sometimes it gets a bit whiffy, and I don't like to wash it too often because it isn't very good for it, and it takes about 2 days to dry. I am reluctant to spray it with one of these fabric freshener things because I am not convinced they would be very good for his health. Any ideas?

Scottish breezes will work perfectly if not better :). If it's really whiffy then bicarb with the cornflour will help get rid of the smell. Internet wisdom is that bicarb is a safe deodoriser around pets?

You can use baking soda to: Take odors out of the carpet and upholstery – Simply sprinkle a bit on the surface you want to deodorize and let sit for an hour before vacuuming. Clean dog dishes – Baking soda is also an abrasive, making it a good choice for cleaning out dog bowls.google

@JoanneF Here’s a homemade recipe (safe for dogs):
  • Half a cup of bicarbonate of soda
  • Essential oil 12-20 drops
  • Shallow container
  1. Place bicarb into a container.

  2. Add essential oil

  3. Mix thoroughly

  4. You might want to cover it with gauze and fasten with a rubber band.
Some good essential oils:
  • Sweet Orange,

  • Lavender,

  • Ylang Ylang

just for giggles, this is the direct-retail website of a Vermont sheep-farmer, & they make slippers, mittens, insoles, hand & foot muffs, can-cozies, woolen pads for seat-belts & horse halters, & other useful things. :)

I love sheepskin, & i hand-wash mine with a mild non-alkaline soap, lay it flat between 2 thick towels like a sheepskin sandwich, then i roll it in a cylinder & squeeze it gently the length of the cylinder with both hands, hand over hand; then i unroll it, lay down another thick towel, lay the skin over it, cover it with another thick towel, roll the 3 into a cylinder, & repeat the gentle squeezing to get out as much water as i can.
Finally, i lay it flat, WOOL side down, on an absorbent surface - a towel, a blanket, _________ .
I replace the absorbent surface with a new, dry one, at least twice during the 1st day; sometimes i jelly-roll the skin in the absorbent surface that i'm about to replace with a fresh layer, & repeat the squeezing process.
