Bell training

Hello all

I've just purchased a service bell and hoping to train my puppy to ring the bell when she needs to go toilet.

Has anyone had any experience of this? Any hints or tips you can give would be greatly appreciated

I've not trained my dog to do this but have you considered training her simply to bark when she wants to go out? I did this with mine and think it's more straightforward - plus, of course, it can be generalised to doors that don't have a bell on it.

My dog rings a bell but just as a trick (we tell people he has trained me to bring treats when he rings), not to go to the toilet.

I first trained him to target with a paw using a clicker - to a hand, then a hand with a post-it, then the post-it on different surfaces including the bell.

There are videos on YouTube that can show you how to train this but be aware that dogs often ring the bell just to go out and play! Also, the time between a puppy realising they need to toilet and being unable to hold that toilet is zero so she would have to be housetrained first. If you want advice on that please ask.

What if you loose the bell or forget to take it with you when you go somewhere?
Murphy goes to the door if he needs to go outside or at night he will go to the babygate and rattle it to alert us.

We did the same for our dog when she was a puppy. They worked beautifully and it took about ten minutes to train her. They still hang on the back door handle (she's now over two) and she always rings them when she wants to go out. Also very useful when we visit other people's houses as we take them with us so she knows what door to ring if she needs to go out. I found a training session on YouTube which showed me how to train her to use the, and it really was very easy.
