I am expecting mixed opinions on this and I value them positive or negative.in a couple of weeks my husband is 65 and we are having a family BBQ. betty is still a boisterous 5 and half month old and she goes crazy when visitors arrive which isn't often. My sister and my mum came yesterday and she jumped up on my sister knee and proceeded to wee on her which is not the first time she has done this to her, she jumped up and caught my mums arm with her Edward Scissorhands claws so I am wondering what the best way to keep her calm but involved. would I be best putting her in her crate where she can see people or get one of those tie out things just for the bbq as I don't really like the idea of her being tied up permanently or just let her run around like a lunatic I know she settles down eventually it will be mostly adults a couple of children one being my nephew who she sees daily but he jumps around and winds her up she thinks he is playing but not everybody wants a dog jumping up and licking them or trying to get there food . Plus my back gate will be opening and closing all the time so don't want her to escape either. Suggestions please

For her safety, I would say definitely contain her. It's really hard at an event like this to constantly monitor her, and it will be really hard for her not to pester people for barbecue food. Apart from the escape risk, there are other possible dangers. We had a barbecue last year and someone, without thinking, put the bone from a chicken drumstick on a low wall where T, being an opportunistic scavenger, seized the opportunity to scavenge. I had some very anxious hours over that - people just aren't aware. Whether you use a crate, a tie out (attach to a harness please and try to get one of the plastic coated wire ones as they cannot constrict enough to do harm if they get round her neck) or a pen is really just about what suits you best.

When we've gone to barbecues and similar events one of us sits a sensible distance from food and small children with Jasper on lead. Not an option for you as you'll be busy, but if there's someone you trust who is likely to be sitting most of the time rather than moving around and mingling, maybe they could have her on lead for a bit? She might be better able to settle then than if shut in a crate etc. and kept away from everyone.

For the bbq today I put Bettys harness on and attached a tie out cable she pulled at it with such force that she snapped the harness . Then I put her on her long training lead but she kept get wrapped up in it so the only option left was her cage which she didn't really like . My sister in law said awww let her out and I said I didn't want her jumping up at people and she said she ll be fine and do you know she was as good as gold didn't jump on anyone's knee (maybe because id previously played with her with her flirt pole) just happily went and greeted people and she s been brilliant all day . She is now asleep in her bed ..well done Betty!!

Sometimes they surprise us in a good way!

She really was a star ..she got on with all the people except my sons friend she barked at him from when he arrived until bed time he stayed over night and thought 6ft 5 and if I pick her up for him to stroke her she doesn't bark all the time but when I put her down she s bark bark lol

I think if someone makes you anxious - and being 6' 5" could be reason enough - then being picked up and held so that person can stroke you is going to make you a whole load more anxious.

The only time she wasn't barking at him was when he had food. She carried on barking at him right until he went out the door to go home. I felt quiet sorry for him lol
