Harri the Welsh Terrier's Diary

Oh it's so hot! Mum got caught out this morning when taking me for my walk and I got really really hot :(. It had been quite cool and cloudy but then the sun came out and the temperature rocketed. I was so miserable.

Mum sat me down in the shade, gave me a drink and then poured a lot of water on a piece of cloth which she had in her bag. When it was all wet she wrapped it round me. It was lush - so lovely and cool and I started to feel much happier. We headed back to the car and then because Mum said I was wearing all her spare drinking water we stopped at a pub so she could have a nice cool drink too.

I am soooooo bored!I really want to play and I keep asking Mum for a game but after a minute or two I'm too hot again :(

I've dug up all Dad's bedding plants to make myself a nice cool den under the apple tree and Mum's put a bowl of water there for me too. She's says she's not sure what Dad will say when he comes home though. I don't think he'll mind - they were only boring old flowers.

Did you miss me? Grandad has been very sick and Mum had to go and stay with Grandma. I went too. It was a bit boring as I was left home alone for ages every afternoon but he's all better now and we're home!

It's also my birthday!!! I had a new squeaky ball and a delicious beef trachea stuffed with something tasty for tea

I went back to my doggy class tonight; I had to miss last week as I was keeping Grandma company. We did some really difficult things including the PAT dog rules which is really advanced as I'm only doing the Kennel Club Bronze award! Mum says I am very good when I listen but the other dogs are so much more interesting than doing boring sits and stays!

Anyway I think I did very well tonight as did my trainer - I won the Dog of the Week Award ( it was full of yummy liver cake too!):D

ps Do you like my new grown up hair style?

Bella is here for the whole week! Dad was chasing the horrid red monster that lives in the shed today so I showed Bella how brave I was by helping him see it off.

I think Bella was well impressed!

Bella goes home today. I'm really going to miss her even if she is a bit bossy at times!

Mum is worried about the darn cat. I know it was naughty of me to chase him last week but I didn't really mean any harm. I've scared him though and he doesn't want to come into the house. He has only been home twice this week and even then it was because Mum heard him meowing in the front garden and went out and carried him in and straight upstairs where I'm not allowed. He's even having his meals up there. He won't go out either without being carried downstairs to the back door. He was happy using the cat flap to come in and out but he won't now :(

Mum says he's looking very thin as he's missing so many meals. I do feel really bad about it. Does anyone know how to make him happy again?

If you make the cat as comfortable as possible and get Harri something to distract him i.e. a Kong while the cat is down then make sure the cat is comfortable to walk past him and makes him ignore the cat.

How old is the cat, Harri? Your mum has to find a way of making sure you never scare him again, even though I know you only want to play. And then I think she should create safe refuges for him - one outside, where he can be fed if he doesn't want to come in (is it possible to find a pen/large crate with an entrance the cat can get through and you can't?), and one inside - upstairs is absolutely fine, my cat is always fed in the (large, walk-in) airing cupboard and has his litter tray in the bathroom.

Then a bit of bribery with delicacies to tempt the house into the rest of the house - or from upstairs to outside and vice versa - while Mum ensures you're safely out of the way.

It might be possible that a pheromone like Feliway or even medication could help. Medication worked well for a cat I used to have who was spraying in the house because she was stressed by her sister hiding and then ambushing her.

Mum says thank you Violet and Judy. He has all the upstairs to himself ( he's 7 Mum says) and it's only about 4ft from the cat flap to the stairs. I can't open this new stair gate :( but he can get past it very easily. It's not going to be possible really to feed him outside cos the neighbours have cats and we have a farm on one side so there are lots of rats. I love trying to hunt the rats but I haven't caught one yet. They don't play fair!

Mum's going to get some Feliway :)
