That's really sweet to hear. For Olive's 4th birthday I would love to do something like this as she turned 3 today! Its a great idea :)
 
Murphy is two today.. We took him on a nice walk in the woods and he has a big bone as a treat.. When he got bored of posing he decided to play the fool leaping about and rolling on the ground just having fun.

Well the visitors have all gone now so things are getting back to normal. We are hoping to go for a breakfast picnic in the woods tomorrow. Murphy coped really well all things considered but I think he is also glad to have the house back to normal.

This afternoon Murphy had a play date. He knows this little dog but its the first time he has been to our house.. Murphy shared his pool, his toys, and his treats without hesitation.. Im a proud mummy this afternoon.. For once I have the well behaved social dog!

Poor Murphy... for the next three days there is no chance of a long walk at the woods or to the nature reserve because there is a little girl and her dog visiting the city.. Shes one of the giants from Royal de luxe and city planners have closed roads and redirected traffic for visitors but that means residents are more or less trapped at home!
I think we will have to think of some nice games for Murphy instead.

That means this morning we were able to leave the city and take Murphy for a proper walk. Not sure if its stress or the nasty local park but he has a bit of an upset tum aand got dad out of bed twice last night (well 12.30am and 6am) so if there is no improvement today it will be a visit to the vet tomorrow..
This morning he was just happy to be out.

I hope Murphy is OK. I'm assuming he didn't see the dog and get a terrible fright?
 
@JudyN they are from the French street theatre company Royal de luxe and were here as part of our city of culture celebrations.

I didnt take Murphy into the crowds and stayed up on a roof terrace some distance away myself...

Im quite proud of Murphy today and he didnt even do anything.Our previous case worker advised against having a dog, she said she thought it would be a strain and a burden.
But today we had a visit from OH's current case worker and she agreed that the benefits we get from having Murphy far outweigh any extra stress he might bring..
OH has recently been discharged from the lung clinic because his physical condition and lung capacity has improved so much that he is now above average for his age. His weight and cholesterol are good and the walks in nature reservations that we take with Murphy are keeping his brain active so that he isnt depressed or showing any rapid increase in his dementia.

The fact is that while his social skills are failing fast being with Murphy has given him a reason and a way of touching base with people even if its just to say goodmorning as he passes and thatwalking and caring for Murphy plus spotting the wildlife and birds we see on our walks are keeping his interest and giving him a purpose.

Im glad someone realises that a dog can be a lot more than a pet..

That's really moving, @Mad Murphy I hope your OH continues to do well and enjoys his life for a good while longer.
 
Lovely to hear. There was actually a short piece on the Scottish news last night about the health and wellbeing benefits of caring for pets.
 
Thankyou .. There have been so many studies showing the benefits and I saw with my own mother in law who had alzhiemer that she remembered the dogs names long after mine was forgotten and changed the dogs water every time she went to the kitchen, when Benny (my beagle) begged at her she checked the clock and said 'no no its not 5oclock yet, no dinner yet'..This from a woman who had no idea if she had eaten or what day or time it was when applied to her own life. I found her reading the newspaper to Benny showing him the photos and explaining who people were etc it was lovely to see because by this point she was given many one word answers in response to us.

So I was shocked when our case worker and people at the dementia society reacted so negatively about us getting another dog after Benny died.
Im glad that both our current case worker and specialist agree that in our case Murphy has given us not only company but a way of finding a past time that we can both enjoy and remain active in even though OH's life is limited due to this awful disease. ( OH has FTD not alzhiemers)
