Please can someone help me

Hello my partner had a 8year old Staffie x lab. For the last few months he has been biting his back end around his tail on his side, taking chunks of his fur out and then it's bleeding and scabbing. I have flead him every 4weeks for the last 2years, he has been treated for mites every 4weeks
I am at a complete lose and the vet can't see him for 6weeks. Please can someone advise me on what I can do or know what it is thank you.

First I would try another vet - 6 weeks is far too long to wait for treatment.

Biting at the back end is often a sign of fleas. You said you have treated him but some fleas are becoming resistant to some products and some products are simply not effective. What did you use? To check, see if you can find any dark gritty specks in his coat, especially around his tail. Drop them on to some wet, white tissue - if they 'bleed' out a rusty brown colour, fleas are likely the cause (they would be flea faeces). You would need to treat your house with a good product like Indorex and vacuum like mad to break the flea lifecycle processes from reinfesting your home as eggs hatch and breeding repeats itself. Vacuum into corners, skirting boards, soft furnishings - then do it again. Repeat every day.

If you are confident it isn't fleas it could be an allergy but it can be very hard to find out what he might be allergic to. You could start with food - what is he eating? Have you changed anything like household products? That said it isn't likely it would be so localised.
 
I have been using the rspcc flea and mite drops.

I have been using the flea spray and carpet treatment for my home.

The only thing which I have changed in the last few months is been my fabric condition and I ran out of flea shampoo and brought some from b n m so I have stopped using both.

It only seem to happen when it's hot or he is hot.

I will try another vets, I rang my vets last week explain what he was doing but apparently fully booked for the next 6 weeks.

Could it be a hot spot? It's not something I've experienced so can't give any suggestions for advice or treatment though - maybe someone else can.

I'm shocked that you can't get an appointment for 6 weeks. That's just so wrong.
 
I am at a loss, I have tried everything I can think of for fleas and mites but can't seen anything in his fur. It's the two side of his tail and just that one spot which I uploaded. It seem to be when it's warm and on a night. I am going to ring another vet which is close to me. Just didn't want to change his vet as he has been going there since we got him at 10weeks old. He has never had this problem before which is why I am so confused to what it might be.

He will only eat one kind of dog food which is Beef Wag.

Really- get him to any vet asap. He's in trouble and having a miserable time bless him. let us know how you go on.
 
Very often over the counter flea treatments are not very effective, you will get a better and more effective product form the vet.
I would also suggest the same as @merlina it could be an anal gland problem and a visit to your vet would be advisable.
 
Well, Wagg is mainly cereals which are hard for dogs to digest (less than 4% beef in the red kibble - presumably not even that inother pieces - according to the Allaboutdogfood website where it scores at 0.8 out of 5). Poor digestion can be something that causes skin reactions although I still would expect it to be less localised. If you are interested in improving his diet there are better foods for a similar price. Skinners is a similar cost and scores better, if budget is less of a concern there are many others.

If it is a hot spot, Stinky Stuff gets good reviews.

If it is his anal glands, 6 weeks of painful glands will be utterly miserable - it's a quick procedure to empty them and the vet nurse might be able to do it if that saves a wait.

I don't know anything about the RSPCA flea treatments - does anyone else have anything about them?
 
Sounds like his anal glands need emptying. Never heard of waiting six weeks to see a vet so I'd be finding somewhere else ASAP. We usually get an appt. the same or following day here. Quite a few dog groomers do anal glands too.
 
I have him in at wilsons vet at 5pm. I have asked them to give him a full check.

He's my baby and I don't care what anything costs I will pay it.

It's starter a few months ago but he only done it for a few weeks so I thought fleas so flead him and he didn't do it anymore but the a week ago he started again but this time making him self bleed.

I have took on board about his food and will try him on a different one. I have brought quite a few over the years but he just turns his nose up and leaves it.

I am sure the vets will tell me what is wrong with him hopefully. They said when I told them what he was doing to bring him down for 5 as it was available and that the vet he is at shouldn't be making him wait 6weeks as it's not just a check up and to cancel my insurance with them.

Often you can make a dry kibble more appealing by mixing it with just a small amount of wet food, or even adding a bit of boiling water to release the smell (making sure it's cooled sufficiently before giving it to the dog of course!).

I hope all goes well at the vet.

I would start by definitely taking him to another vet, six weeks is far to long for the poor dog to have to wait to bee seen.
 
Hello all sorry didn't get back to yous yeaturday. He needs his anal glands emptying and the one on his back has been a hot spot so I have some spray off the vet

No fleas mites or ticks. (Thank the lord)

He is booked in on Monday for his bum.

Hopefully this will sort it and I can stop worrying.

I would like to thank you all for your help and advice .it has been very much appreciated.

I have changed his food aswel with some recommended by the vet

Glad that's all it was. I had one with anal gland problems. We fed a small raw carrot daily to increase fibre intake and also sprinkled Protexin Profibre on her food and had no more trouble.

Did you buy the food from the vet? if so there can be a large markup in the price and you should be able to get it elsewhere if you want that particular brand.
When changing food do it over a week or so mixing the new with the old if its a kibble in case of a delicate stomach.
If you can, do a little research into foods as there are some good hypoallergenic ones around £30 for 15kg delivered.
I use skinners salmon and rice as rice is the primary ingredient and digest better than wheat.
 
For hot spots you can also dab on sudocrem too, and hope it doesn't get licked off. Glad it's all sorted now.
