Hi there, lovely to meet you all. I've a 2yr old Lhasa Also called Chronic. Chronic is currently very unwell. He's been like this now for as our 5 months. It's said has got IBD, blood works were normal 5 months ago but no repeat bloods done since. He's been put on Steroids from the get go of him being poorly & now on a immune suppressor. He was on a very high dose & has now started a reduction. He's no different now then from when all this started. The steroids have given him a pot belly, lost so much fur that has got several bold patches and it looks as though it will never return. He's got constant runs, sickness has stopped but Chronic is not getting better, PDSA vets all agree has got IBD. I'm struggling with seeing like this every day. All he does is sleep. I've lost my fur baby, he used to be so full of life, loved to play etc but now he's a totally different dog. He cries when he poops, he cries if I touch his belly he cries not long after food. Is it right that I continue to allow him to live like this? NO meds diet or medicated food as helped. He's on a very bland diet but it seems he's struggling to digest the food of chicken, 1 carb, & veg. My husband & I are talking about putting Chronic out of pain, this breaks my heart into little pieces, he's my baby, yet I can't carry on seeing him like this, in so much pain with no relief what so ever. I know what constant pain is like as I've a chronic pain disease so I do feel for him so much. He was a birthday pressie, he was so wanted, still is but I mean from the get go, losing my baby would destroy me but I need to think for him & about him, not me or hubby. My question is... is there anything else we can try that could save my babies life? Or do you agree with putting Chronic to sleep? Please be as open & honest with me, I need straight forward answers as the vets don't give me that. Please, can anyone help me and Chronic? Many many thanks. X

Oh my goodness. Welcome to the forum, sorry it's in such upsetting circumstances. I don't have the experience to offer any other advice I'm afraid, other than suggesting to seek the advice of another vet. There will be some better informed replies shortly, and I do hope you're able to turn around Chronic's health for the better.

Do you have any contact with any of his littler mates or his breeder.. Is this problem showing in any of them.? As you know by now this cannot be cured but in most cases it can be managed.
If other little mates are affected you might get helpful info from them.

I dont want to be harsh but in cases that do not respond to medication and diet the prognosis is poor and sometimes it is better not to prolong suffering.

Really sorry..

I am so sorry. ..but Quality of life Has to come before Quantity. ...i am crying reading your post so it must be heartbreaking for you ...if he were my dog i would have the vet out to home and let him go peacefully. ..if he is as much pain as you say it must be awful ...if there is no hope of pain relief then you aredoing the right thing by him not matter how heartbreaking it is the most selfless thing you can do ...
I saw a vet programme where a frenchie had the same condition. ..
HUGE hugs to you ....lots of love xxx

I think the first thing you need to do is get a second opinion, the PDSA Is not renounced for expert diagnosis, you also need to find a forum for dogs with IBD and seek help and advice from there, “ if “he had IBD, the pot belly and hair loss could be symptoms of many other issues, seek a second opinion before you put your boy to sleep, the right advice and diagnosis could make the world of difference.

Hi there, I've been trying alsorts to contact his breeder. I think she lied from the moment I picked Chronic when a few wks old. His papers never came through, she's never replied to a message or a door knock. I feel as though Chronic may have been doomed from the start.

I was hoping someone who'd reply would be honest with me and I sincerely thank you for your honesty. I know your right, it's like back & forth in my head, if what maybe etc.. but I know in my heart that in fact he's in too much pain, he looks as though he's ready to go. Bless him. . Thank you for your reply & complete honesty. Thanks & take care.

Im so saddened to read your post @Woodeg81 - what a terrible position for you both to be in.

Have you seen a specialist in IBD?

It's pretty rubbish that the person who loves them the most has to be the one that makes that final decision. Like the others have said, quality over quantity. Sending lots of love and hugs. You will always find support here on the forum x x

Hi Josie, Thanks so much for your lovely reply, yes we have, their instructions were for him to have an Endoscopy, though he had to wait for his Steroid reduction as his dose was far too high for an anaesthesia but due to the steroids making it look like he was responding they put it off a few weeks, that few weeks while the dose was low should of been that window for the endoscopy, in my view, but after wk 4 on low dose Chronic went down hill & PDSA increased the dose which meant the specialist couldn't do the procedure. Now it seems we are too wait for it now. He is a total different dog. The dog we brought up was loving, caring, funny & loved everything in life, now he sleeps, gets angry if we move him away from our food, he's now raiding bins, he's started to go to bite me or hubby, he only springs to life when it's feeding time. I think I've just answered my own question.... He's in pain after each meal, each bowel movement...breaks me into pieces hearing his cries Josie, I think for his sake it's best all round, I don't know what the steroids have done to him inside but I don't think he can come back from this now.
Thank you so much for your kind words, brought some comfort to me, you all have, sorry I've rambled. Thanks again, sending love bk, Claire xx

I can’t imagine what it must be like for you to see this change in him. Sounds like he’s been super lucky to have spent his life so far with you - always treasure that!
It seems like it’s been going round in circles for you all.
Don’t apologise for rambling, we all love our dogs so much and even reading your post brought tears to my eyes.
It’s good to get things off your chest with other like minded dog lovers x

I'm so sorry about your situation @Woodeg81, he's such a cute little dog!
Unfortunately it sounds like you were caught out with a bad breeder and maybe the best thing for his welfare is to let him go if he's in pain, I'm so sorry :(
Let us know won't you.

This is so sad and its such a pity that the breeder does sound as if she is avoiding you.

Concentrate now on your little one, give him all the love you can.

The bloody breeder needs banned from breeding puppies!! Urgh!!

Poor Chronic!! We are in the what’s best for our baby stage ourselves and it’s not easy!!

Like someone suggested earlier have you joined and IBD group and asked advice from them? Also speak with a RAW food specialist. We have had issues with fostered Great Danes before and switching to RAW helped with their tummy and bowel upsets. Speak to a specialist first though and see if they think it could help.

Thinking of you, it’s so difficult to know what’s best to do for our babies. Xxx
