Dudley sleeps on my bed. For the past three nights he has been coming upstairs with me as usual, but instead of getting on the bed as usual he sits on the floor and stares at me. I end up picking him up and putting him on the bed where he promptly curls up and goes to sleep.
He gets off the bed ok in the mornings and still jumps up on the sofa.
The bedroom door and the living room door are left open so he can go downstairs if he wants to but he never does.
Should I continue to pick him up and put him on the bed or leave him until he jumps up on his own?

It might be worth a vet check to make sure there's no discomfort stopping him from jumping up on the bed - is it higher than the sofa? As long as he's happy to be picked up and he's not too heavy for you I don't see why you shouldn't do that - but you could also give him a step to make it easier for him to get up himself. If you google 'dog step' you'll see different ones you can buy, or you might have a suitable stool.

The bed is a little bit higher than than the sofa. My husband says he is just lazy and I shouldn't lift him. He is only 3. I was going to try a ramp and see if that would help. I know there is one you can get for the car but our car is quite high and I always lift him into that.
Thank you for your help

This is where I think it's better in the long run for dogs to be in their beds on the floor...as they get older they struggle to jump into the human bed, or indeed even climb the stairs without help...but it surprises me that he is only 3! Definitely worth a trip to the vet to check for discomfort in his joints etc.

I have made an appointment with the vet. I have also put his bed upstairs when I went up last night. I still ended up picking him up and putting him on the bed as he did the eye thing and I felt sorry for him

There's no need to worry about indulging him even if he is lazy, as long as you're happy with it. When we have eaten on the sofas and Jasper is whining because he wants to lick the bowls, we have been known not just to take the bowls to him, so he doesn't have to get up, but even hold the bowls tilted at an angle so he doesn't have to lift his head:oops:

It could be that he’s very clever and knows that by looking at you pathetically you will pick him up and put him on the bed. I speak from experience lol Spike is a master of the pathetic I can’t do it look. But pop him to the vets if you are worried x
