I picked up the latest doggy mag from my vets while I was there last week and in it was an article about Bayer the makers of many tick and flea repellents. Working together with the university of Utrecht they are asking people to download their tick app.
You register your dogs age breed etc and if you find a tick you use the app to register which dog had the tick and pinpoint the location of your walk on the map. They then send you a test tube kit. which you place the tick in and send back.
Its then identified and tested for any disease its carrying. You get notified about the outcome but also on the app you can see the results of others who have sent in ticks so that its easy to see if your favourite walk has become infested or dangerous.

I think its a great idea and if it gives them a better idea of what kind of ticks and what the most common diseases are that they are carrying maybe they can develop better protection for our dogs.

Anyway after yesterdays walk in the woods we found a tick on Murphy yesterday evening
the tester kit is on the way and I will keep you updated about what happens..

Is it an international study? I'd be interested in participating too (except for the part where I need to tell the post office what's in the envelope, although I think @JudyN outdoes us all on that score  )

At the moment I think its just here in NL but maybe if they get enough interest they will try other places too.

:D:D @JudyN and her postal surprises !

Just remebered this, well the test tube thingy came and we sent off our tick .. A week later we had the result that it wasnt carrying any nasty diseases and this has been added to the map as a grey marker to show a non infected tick was found and checked there.
Apart from sending in any ticks I find I think I will be using the app to check the infected tick levels in any area we might consider visiting.

After getting his first few ticks last week I’d like to give this a go to protect our boy. Can’t find on the App Store, what’s its exact name again?

Many thanks

DD

Its this ; Tekenscanner at the moment its only in NL as Bayer are working with the university of Utrecht (big vet science uni there).

However Bayer have said that they are planning to launch the app in several European countries by 2020.. The Tickscanner App
