Our Shih-Poo is 6 months old. He sleeps all night and goes in his crate at around 10.45pm. We always let him out into the garden for his last toilet just before we go to bed but this means waking him up and coaxing him out into the garden. It just seems so cruel although he always has a wee. So if he goes out at say 9-9.30 would we expect him to sleep through til 07.30 or do we have to keep on doing what we’re doing?

I would gauge it by what time he needs to go out in the morning. For example, my dog has always had a strong bladder and will happily stay in until 11.00 am if it's raining. So if your pup could wait longer in the mornings, then letting him out a little earlier in the night shouldn't be a problem. That said, if he goes in his crate at 10.45, you could just take him out then (unless I am misunderstanding you).

Murphy would wake us when he first arrived to say that he needed to go. Gradually he slept through the night and his last wee got earlier and ealier so from midnight we tried 11,30 then 11pm then 10,30 and now the last walk is between 9,30 and 10pm. If they want a wee after that (which they rarely do) they ask to go into the garden.

Lily goes out for her last wee at 10pm but will happily wait for walkies at 8am before she’ll go , always open the door in the morning but she just stares at me and goes back inside :D wish I could go that long without a wee ;)

Jasper used to want to go out a couple of times a night - but eventually I realised that he just wanted to belt down the garden and bark at the monsters. He would be out there for aaaages and I couldn't get him to come in again  Eventually I penned off an area outside a second door, so he could toilet if needed, but not get to the main part of the garden. After two nights of complaining, he started sleeping through :) Now he has last wee around 9.30pm and wakes us up shortly before 7am. But only because he wants his breakfast, he can last till midmorning if it's chucking it down.

I always wake mine and let them out before I go to bed last thing.

I would worry that a young dog would regress with toilet training if given a last chance to go outside.

ETA Sorry , missed out the word Not . It should be- not given a chance to go outside.

Thanks for all your replies. Last night I put him in his crate without letting him out into the garden as usual. Within 2 minutes of going into his crate he started whining which is very unusual as he usually settles straight away. I took him out into the garden after this and he had a wee, came back in and slept all night.
