I’ve been doing some research on raw diet providers and also had a little look at butternut box and their cooked meals.

Wow these are coming up expensive! At the moment I’m getting quotes for around £54 every 2 weeks....

Am I wrong in thinking this seems very expensive!?

I pay £22 a week for raw minced meat bones included for 5 dogs thats 3 lurchers and 2 jrts ...i buy veggies seperately
You can buy natures menu from most large pet stores where the food is already prepared and that is around £1.20 per 400g so even if he had 2 per day that would only work out at £16.80 per week .....
I buy durhams a box of 14... 445g is £10.50 but i cook veggies and add and on a weekly basis add eggs , natural goats yoghurt. ..it seems a lot of work but its not when you get used to it and the health benefits outweighs the time xx

It works out a lot cheaper if you can bulk buy but you will need an extra freezer to be able to do this I bought mine from Gumtree for £25 the firm Judy uses looks very economical:)

Thanks both - I don’t have room for an extra freezer unfortunately and I think I contacted natures menu but it was more expensive. I think maybe because I’m after complete meals - I just don’t have the time to be cooking up all my own things

Its actually cheaper to buy the natures menu in pet stores ...Pets at home stock it and have the minced meat and fruit and veg nuggets to add in...

So everyone.... I have officially made the first steps to getting Den on a raw diet!

My neighbour who also has a 3 year old black lab recommended a local company (prodog) who she uses and today the owner called me and we spoke for over 30 minutes.
She was amazing! And so passionate and she really made me feel confident in changing dens diet.

She lives in W-S-M which is only 20mins from me so this afternoon Dennis and myself went to meet her.

She weighed Den and talked me through the next steps. She said to update her throughout and she even gave me a weeks diet for free.

I could tell how much she believes in raw and making dogs as healthy as they can be.

We start tomorrow!!

Aaaaaaaah

Well, her approach sounds great - I hope Dennis loves his raw.

He was very keen smelling everything in her garage so hopefully a good sign :)

He’s just had his first meal.....

Loved it!!

I separated them into two smaller portions as I wasn’t sure whether the whole lot would disappear in one big gulp but he ate relatively slowly (for a lab)

Great news..I feed mine 2 x daily ....splitting their meals in half xx

Dennis has been suffering recently with his health. First he’s had a bout of diarrhoea which was treated (thought we’d fixed) but has now returned.

Plus his styes.

We got the results from his poo back yesterday and everything looked clear which is good and also bad because now I need to work our what’s causing this diarrhoea still.

So my thinking is: Diet.

He’s been on the same diet for years and has never had an issue before.

Can this change with age?
Is it too late to try raw?

I don’t know what to do for the best.

Any help would be much appreciated

Hi
I fostered Rex at 16months and kept him . He was really thin with very dry skin and dandruff with a very rough coat. I started him on raw the next morning with no ill effects . Within two weeks he put on weight and his coat and skin had improved . Hes now 3 1/2 years old and is the picture of good health. Raw was a choice for his brother when i got him at 8 weeks old.
Give it a try you may find a great improvement to his digestion

Well after wolfing down his first raw meal this morning we struggled to get him to eat his evening meal :-(

He did eat it eventually but it took some persuading and I think he finally ate it I think out of hunger.

Is the a normal response?

Hello Josie. This could happen. Give him half of his meal in the evening. I started him on chicken and beef. I didn't give his full meal just 3/4 in the morning and half in the evening. WolfTucker do a variet pack you can try so you can work out which is his favourite . Perhaps you can give smaller meals three times a day abd see how he get on. It's what i did with Rex to stare with the 1st couple days
After all you feed less raw than kibble.
Hope this helps.

With such a major change of diet, perhaps his digestion’s had a bit of a shock. It could be that the gut bacteria to digest raw is a bit different to those for cooked diets? Not sure, haven’t fed dogs raw for quite a while, bur, if I change from dry to wet, I do it gradually just incase!

Thanks both.

I was told it’s not good to mix raw and kibble at the same time as the digest at different rates.

I think I’ll try smaller and more often!

It might not help that his tum's been a bit off anyway. How much is he having per meal, and is it just chicken mince at the mo?

It'll be bulkier than his kibble because of the water content, so maybe it made him feel fuller than he's used to. I wouldn't try to persuade him to eat it if he's reluctant, or it might stress him and make him more reluctant. It won't hurt to skip a meal.
