I have a 17 week old miniature dachshund. He has always seemed to like to eat a little bit of grass since we got him. Yesterday he threw up what looked like greenish bile but was acting fine apart from being sleepy most of the day because of the heat. This morning I gave him his breakfast and he ate it all. About 5 hours after eating his breakfast he threw it up and it had blades of grass in it. He did was to eat more grass just before he threw up. Why could this be?

Dogs will sometimes eat grass to make themselves vomit, for example if they are feeling a bit nauseous already. But also,at this time of year, the grass is quite sweet and some dogs just like it.

I try to discourage it, you don't know outside whether things like weed killer have been used - and even if you know some grass is safe you can't teach your dog to distinguish between what is ok and what isn't.

You might find that adding green veg to his diet reduces his urge to eat grass. But as JoanneF says, some dogs just like it.
