Itchy skin red ears apoquel not effective steroids work but I do not want to continue using these

Anyone any advice on treatments for allergy itching red ears

Hi my name is Branden I have a 1 year old bullmastiff rottweiler cross named Denzil
 
Hi and welcome, your boy looks lovely:). I've been using a teaspoon of bicarb dissolved in warm water to bathe/clean my ferrets itchy ears recently and it definately seems to have soothed them...though for chronic conditions I'm not so sure how much it would help. As mentioned in the thread though check out dorwest herbs maybe.

Hi flobo thankyou not only is it his ears he nibbles at the inside of his legs etc this is not a problem at the min but he has had 3 courses of steroids and apoquel only the steroids seem to keep allergy at bay I shall certainly try it and thankyou for your input
 
Has your vet suggested anything to find out what he is actually allergic to?

If he were mine, I'd start with food; and feed a diet of something he is unlikely to have had before, like goat or kangaroo. After 6 weeks, if his allergies are better you could start introducing things one at a time (again for 6 weeks to see if a build up affects him).

Hi Joanne thankyou yes the vet has said there is other treatments and we have tried different foods etc .it is not a seasonal thing and the vet is pointing towards maybe dust allergy. Like I said the steroids seem to take an immediate effect were as the apoquel did not really make much of a difference I was hoping to try to find a alternative to steroids without having to go to the expense of maybe having a injection made and causing Denzil anymore discomfort I love him to bits and if i can't find something to keep it at bay then I am leaning towards this being the only way thankyou joeanne
 
If it is dust, you could wipe all surfaces with a damp cloth daily. On the upside, you will have the cleanest house ever!
